This didn't work for me. I had xp installed and couldn't find on xp in Disk management Make "Mark partition as Active".
So i insert a vista bootable cd, make a new partition, it will set bouth as active ...then deleted the new created, that means the recovery partition remais active. I restart my laptop and the recovery started!
Good Luck

Re: HP Recovery Manager Help Needed!!!

hi, i have registered just to write this message and will most likely never visit this site again. i cannot put into words how grateful i am for this solution, i decided out of the goodness of my heart to reinstall xp on a hp dv6000 for my friends father, my journey from problem to problem over the last 16 hours (spent wholey in front of this computer) has been an experience. i laughed, i cried and i got pretty pissed off. in the end this website solved the final problem which i had, I ISSUE A GENERAL WARNING "DO NOT EVER GO FUCKING WITH A HP, THERE THE EQUIVILANT OF A WOMAN ON HER PEROID, YOU DONT WANNA GO THERE!!!!!!!"

thank you for your help it really did help,

I also registered only to thank you. I fucked up an HP Touchsmart PC, i formatted it but the original Touchsmart applications are only in the original settings, you canīt get them anywhere. so i had to restore the system, F11 didnīt do it. Your little but efficient trick did the job. Thank you a lot!!!

Re: HP Recovery Manager Help Needed!!!

I registered to say thanks as well. HUGE Thanks!! My HP would boot to a black screen with the cursor only. Since it wasn't booting right I got the bright idea to run bootrec.exe /fixmbr (DON'T DO THAT). That made it so I couldn't boot to the recovery partition any more.

Since I couldn't boot to windows I couldn't do the Adminsistrative Tools / Disk Management thing. However that made me wonder if I could do it from command line. Luckily you can. Here is a link on how to do that:

How to set active partition in Vista and XP

I was able to get to a command prompt using a Dell recovery CD for my desktop computer (isn't it nice of Dell to make the recovery disk for you??)

If you don't have another recovery disk then you might be able to make a simple windows boot disk that has diskpart on it.

Thanks again.

Re: HP Recovery Manager Help Needed!!!

Thanks mindas22!

Even though this is a laptop thread, please keep this post here to help people that might come across it during a websearch like I did

I used your method to set Recovery Partition "D" to "Active" using your simple steps and I was able to restart my HP desktop computer into HP System Recovery

Only I had to press F10 key on keyboard at bootup after setting D partition "Active". I think Laptops are F11 and Desktops are F10

I am using an HP Pavilion a350n desktop computer that was running XP Home edition.

Originally, and for other reasons, I ended up deleting (not formatting) all the files on the C partition only using a Windows PE Boot CD called MiniPE from DigIWiz

I originally loaded a temporary version of Windows from any available version of XP (in my case Windows XP Pro). Than I had access to Disk Management program where I followed your steps

For those of you without an available Windows install disc to borrow from a friend. A quicker option is to download any type of CD "Boot Disc" such as DigiWiz MiniPE, Hiren's Boot CD or Linux and use a Partitioning Utility such as Partition Magic, Acronis Partition, or Paragon HD tools that are located on many of these Boot CDs. Start up your computer and let the temp operating system load and than look for a partitioning or disc management type utility to set Recovery Partition (usually D partition) to "active"

Hope this helps anyone with an HP desktop that will not start the Factory Install Recovery process using the normal, repeatedly hitting the F10 key on startup---- to begin Recovery program

I bet you can make a previous image of your HP Recovery Partition using Norton Ghost or similar hard drive imaging program and if it ever gets damaged you can restore it back to your D partition, set that "active", restart the computer and it will begin Factory Install Recovery Process that way too. Another insurance policy in case the recovery CDs/DVDs are lost or damaged (or never made by you in the first place)

Re: HP Recovery Manager Help Needed!!!

It seems that the NTLDR file is missing from the boot drive. To solve this you need to boot from XP installation CD and goto recovery console and run command " fixboot C: " it should fix this issue.

As is the custom, I registered to say thank you. I've already talked to about 4 or 5 HP reps(only to discover that I ended up telling them why they were wrong most of the time). It almost got so crazy I contemplated getting a new HDD....

In short; I love you

Okay, This is going to be out of the loop but I have not registered to say thanks, I have registered to get help, and darn, that disk management, to screw all of you up, it is already active over my C: drive. Yeah Ive done F11, alt and F11, disk management, found recovery disks, and it won't take them, it refuses to boot off them. Just loads to windows and doesn't recognize their even there. I can put in the wrong recovery disks for another computer and it says these are the wrong recovery disks, please re enter the proper disks or windows will restart and load. THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS. I'm going in to be an IT in Sept of this year and I feel like a complete moron. HELP! MY MOM IS GOING TO GO UP THE WALL IF I CANT RECOVER WINDOWS.

Re: HP Recovery Manager Help Needed!!!

The following is for guys who has two partitions: primary and recovery, primary has been deleted, and F11 or ALT+F11 keys don't work. Someone advice to delete primary partition and to make recovery partition primary, well ... that's not enough, you also need to make such partition bootable.
1. Delete primary partition: I used windows 7 DVD to delete such partition, of course there are others methods
2. Make recovery partition primary: Use this link
3. Make partition bootable: I used Ubuntu live CD, I run GParted then I saw only one partition, right click in that partition, choose 'Manage Flags' and select 'Boot'
When I rebooted the computer I didn't have to press F11 or anything, it goes right into the Recovery partition

Re: HP Recovery Manager Help Needed!!!

Hi all
First of all - thanks! Your advise with setting partition as active help me too. I got Win7 installed on my HP tx2550ew, which had Vista originally. I was so happy, that after F11 recovery manager opened, but it was just the begiining of my problem.

So i made step by step restore with this manager and all looked fine - first step "formating" and second "restoring" all went good. Than tablet rebooted by itself and started to install some of important stuff afterwards. Than again it rebooted and just wen i saw desktop icons, error occured: "The system registry contains invalid file paths. Installation cannot proceed. This system image was applide without guaranteeing thata drive-letter assignement would match across computers."

And now it's the only thing i can get. No matter what will i try - repair, safe mode, recovery again, microsoft recovery - everything finishes with the same error just before logging on to the system. Any ideas what should i do?
Please, i would really be greatfull for any help!

got my sister-in-laws zv6000 pavillion sitting here. it has 512 ram, running xp sp3. it refuses to run a complete virus scan (mcafee, malwarebytes, stiner, etc), and i wanted to put it back to factory specs and start all over. Guess what- there is no recovery partition. "Someone" deleted the recovery partition. Do you think it might be having a problem with too little memory, or what else can i do.

Could be a virus is preventing you from running those properly.

Try Hiren's BootCD. It's a system recovery image you can download for free.

I registered to say: Thank You. I am so glad I kept reading the posts. I was about to give up and start searching somewhere else. I couldn't get into windows to change the active drive. I made the same mistake using bootrec /fixmbr. I have been trying to get the recovery to work for 10 days. The owner keeps asking when is it going to be ready. I can now tell him today and to come pick it up. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You...

Re: HP Recovery Manager Help Needed!!!

Hi All, I did an idiotic thing last night. It all started when I had to reboot my laptop to install some windows updates (I'm running windows 7 on a HP pavillion dv7). Anyhoo, after the reboot my computer was acting funny. My sound was not working, my tool bar was different and stuff like that. I then remembered that a couple of days earlier I had switched off some start up programs so that my computer would start up faster. I was careful not to deactivate neccessary hardware but I thought that since my computer has been behaving fine up to that point I must have deactivated something important.

So all I wanted to do was to find a default option button which would reactivate all the neccassary devices; that's all. I thought that this is what the HP recovery manager would help me do but instead I found myself reformatting my C drive and configuring my laptop to factory condition. Luckly I did a backup of my files before this (I hope). I found what I beleive to be my back up file. It's in a driver called 'recovery E'. Inside this driver is a file called 'recovery' but I do not know how to re-install it on my C drive.

I have no problems activating this E driver as instructed above but I do not know how to proceed from there.

In the recovery Manager there are three main options.

1-(I need help immediately)
2-(I'd like to identify any problems)
3-(I'd like to take prequations)

Could some one please help me (step by step) on how to proceed from here so I can re-install all the contents contained in the 'recovery file' back into my C drive.

Thank you very much for taking the time to read this.

Peter
