Acer laptop shutting down

Hi there, I could really do with some help.

My Acer Extensa 2000 keeps shutting down in the middle of some programs.

I have followed some ideas I have read in other threads, (i.e heat issues) with limited succses.

I have recently recovered my hard drive in the hope of resolving this issue. I have downloaded speedfan, (although have not used it other than to get the temperatures.) The last time the laptop closed down the tempurture was about 49 degrees. I now have the laptop on a baking tray to increase airflow.

Mostly the shutdown occurs when playing a game (Patrician III) within about 10 minutes of loading. Since I have taken the measures above the laptop has only shutdown once other than when trying to play a game. I had 3 or 4 internet explorer pages open, mostly from this site..

Any help would be really appreciated.

Well the temperature seems fine, but you could always try dusting out any air pathways on the laptop, as when your playing a game the cooling on the gpu in a laptop will cause even more heat, so if there is any dust in the machine it could be blocking airflow.

Also try updating drivers for the chipset/graphics if you haven't already. Baking sheet is fine, could try also seeing if adding a fan to the side of the laptop helps it any, if it does, there might be dust like I stated above. Probably some preventive option in the bios that causes it to just shutoff if it reaches a certain temperature threshhold.

Turn the laptop off. Remove the battery. Plug the laptop to the mains. Work/play. The problem still continues?
