is that the only USB device your having troubles with...
have you tried it in another computer. IF it is the only device not working and it doesn't work in another computer.. the mouse decided to pack it in... you'll have to replace it. IF the mouse works only on other machines.... something odd has occured with your laptop possibly the removeall or corruption of the driver sets for the mouse. IF nothing USB works at all in the computer but works on other machines.... your USB ports have a possibility of being toasted.... (i've seen it happen, actually had a machine in just recently that all the USB ports on it were completely dead.... giveing the same error.... nothing to resolve it.... be it a bios update, system recovery, nothing would resolve the issues. only solution would be to send it away to get fixed, and gateway turned around and asked nearly 500 bucks to replace the motherboard due to not being under warranty anymore) I'm sure some others will be along to give you other suggestions.

Back ontopic.. i have similar problems in the past.. Sometimes reinstalling the chipset drivers and rebooting has worked in the past. Worth a try if you have not already done so. |

This doesn't guarantee that it's only the mouse....

yeah the mouse and my external harddrive worked on another computer but on mine the mouse just start blinking a few times and then its dead... and btw I reinstalld the chipset thing and rebooted but no help... well I might havto send it to some shop to get it fixed then... but first I'll let some other, more computer knowing guy take a look at it... well thanks for all your answers and please keep them coming cause it is always cheaper to do it yourself =) ...(unless you toasted your first computer and had to put out another 900 for a new one like I did =P)

Do you have access to another usb mouse by any chance.. IE Borrow one from a mate to see if that works on your laptop.
If that don't work then i t could be a dead usb port that Judas has suggested. Do you have access to another usb mouse by any chance.. IE Borrow one from a mate to see if that works on your laptop. yeah I tried my roommates mouse but it was as dead as my other one...
although one time today I plugged in my mouse and it worked about 30 min then it died again so its kinda wierd I use service pack 2 and well I can't use windows update since I have an illigal copy of xp... or rather then illigal its a friend that put it up but I can't use windows updater... but the problem started just one day when I started my computer and then after that its been like that... That sounds like a usb port being "loose" if it's randomly working...
Is your usb hardrive exhibiting the same symptoms... if so.. i'd suggest not using the USB hardrive or leaving it plugged in.... I'd send the laptop away for repair asap... it could be as simple as the soldering points have become degraded.... or at least hope.... if not it's likely the board showing signs of failure.
