ASUS X56A Brightness Issue in XP

Hi!

I recently bought this laptop and the Fn + Brightness keys (F5 to dark and F6 to bright) doesn't seem to work.. well it DOES, the On Screen Display bar goes higher and lower, but the screen doesn't.

I know it works, because I can adjust the brightness while the XP load screen is loading.. then once in windows, it doesn't work. Is this a common ASUS issue? please advise...

you may be able to manually adjust it in the asus control panel if there is one... usually it's related to the power settings.

weird that the keys don't work IN windows.

Re: ASUS X56A Brightness Issue in XP

Okay. FOUND THE PROBLEM!!!

It's the INTEL G45 video driver.

Running in safe mode the Fn key works..

Uninstalling the video driver the Fn key woks..

I tried the older video driver and latest one, It still won't work. anyone know how to tweak this at all to make it run? I'm suspecting the video driver is linked to some asus power software (which i don't have installed and running) which is causing my issue

Re: ASUS X56A Brightness Issue in XP

Sorry for triple posting..

but i asked Intel about the problem, they said its got nothing to do with the driver.

It's something to do with the ATK drivers/hotkey utility or something.. i rang asus direct and they couldnt help me out cos 'if it works in vista, we cant support for xp as its not faulty' but he did mention that it must be a glitch or something with the ATK driver..

such a shame

Re: ASUS X56A Brightness Issue in XP

Have you tried uninstalling and then install again the ATK software? Go to the downloads section of Asus website, then choose Laptop > Apps from the combo boxes. Download the ATK and Hotkey software for XP, but be sure to try more than one version.

I had a similar problem with Power4Gear; a version x.x.x.y didn't work, but a x.x.x.z did. Make sure you try more than one. Good luck!
