Dell Lattitude 620 "file missing" help please

Hi there,

I am new to the forum - it looks like a great place to spend some time

I am looking for help with a missing file - when I boot up to XP pro - I am getting the message "file needed" it is asking for sthda.sys on Sigmetel High Definition WDM Driver disc needed

I have tried to find it on the Dell web site with no luck

Any help with the missing file would be very welcome

Many thanks in advance

The best thing to do (for now at least) is to uninstall the Sigmatel drivers from within Add/Remove Programs, reboot, cancel the "Found New Hardware" installer when you do, and then reinstall using the drivers from HERE.

Of note, when you run the installer for the driver, which first extracts to a folder called off your C:\ drive called "C:\dell\drivers\R171789", or if you extract the exe file manually to a folder (which can be done using WinRAR or 7-Zip), you will find that sthda.sys file in a sub folder called "WDM".

I still recommend uninstalling, then reinstalling the audio drivers though just in case something else related to the sound driver is missing.
