Sad Infrared receiver

Hello everyone,

I bought a compaq presario V4118PA laptop 3 years ago, and i recently noticed that i don't have an infrared receiver. So i dismantled the laptop and sure enough i saw a dummy infrared lens, soldered to the mainboard[by four pins]. So if there is anyway that i can activate the receiver, i can use it with a remote to control my pc...
Any help is appreciated

I have a helwett-packard 09BC mainboard.

Thanks in advance

Re: Infrared receiver

you could probably configure Girder or WinLIRC to work with the IR receiver, but i really have no idea how to do that... i used to have a custom made IR receiver on my old PC controlled by Girder, but i haven't used it for a while now...

here i a discussion i found on using Girder with an IR laptop receiver, check it out

Re: Infrared receiver

you'd need to install drivers for the IR receiver before any software utility can work with it

of course, i assumed that that was already done... since it's a notebook, the IR receiver inside is controlled by some kind of hardware... not like the IR receiver i had custom made, it connected via a COM port... so no drivers were needed for the IR receiver...

you know... funny thing... i did some experimenting back when i made my IR receiver... you could actually build a whole network using IR diodes, but they have to be able to transmit as well as receive... of course the data flow through a infra red network would be... putting it mildly, extremely slow...
