LAPTOP Shuts down ! OVerheating?

Hello, New to this forum, I did a search about this topic but couldnt find any.

I'm using Compaq presario with AMD turion 64 single processor, windows XP. My laptop will just shut down by itself. Don't really know the cause for now but I'm suspecting that its overheating coz I can hear the fan spinnning wildly before it shuts down. Shut down might confuse you guys, it does not go through the process of shutting down by WINDOWS. It just turns OFF.

ANybody experienced this?

Several times with my old laptop. It's overheating in my case. Try lifting the laptop on 4 small feet so that there is plenty of airflow underneath and on all sides. I am talking about 1-2cm from the bottom, and 5+ on the sides.
Does it still do it?

You might need to clean the intakes/fans if there is dust there.
If you do open the laptop, remember to unplug it and remove the battery before you do so.

one of my friend has compaq presario with the same processor as yours & he did complain about the temps of CPU. he was running idle at about 60 degree Celsius but his major problem was his HDD which was even hotter.
You can download any temperature monitoring software like CPU Thermometer or any other program & check the temps at the boot & 30 mins. after the boot if it gets too hot then you might need a Laptop Cooler.
