A friend of mine has asked me to look at his lappy to see why he is getting a disk error on start up. Since I don't have a lot of experience with lappy's I figure I would ask here.

To troubleshoot I booted using SLAX and could not find any drives mounted. You can hear the drive try to read but after a while I get a single beep.

I decided to take it out of the lappy and hook it up to my normal rig but it can't be found in the BIOS and it crashes Vista 64 before it even finishes loading. Hooking up the drive after the OS loads leads to an instant lock up.

Is it safe to say the thing is toast?

It's an old notebook that he won in a draw when a friend's office refreshed their line up with new Dell's. God only knows how old it is but I feel safe saying it is between 7-10 years.

He may have dropped it but he isn't saying for sure.

Thanks, gents. I figured as much but hate to waste money, even if it isn't my own. Plus he pays me in beer. Last time I did a simple XP install he bought me a two four aka a flat.
