EEK! dangerous temps?

Hi guys.
I thought my laptop started to get a little warm.

So i downloaded coretemp to check, now i know it reaches 90 degrees celsius on each core with 100 % load, and this is when it stands on a targus chill mat..

Is this dangerous temp?

My cpu is a mobile amd turion 64 x2 tl-62 2,1ghz?

Re: dangerous temps?

Yes, that is dangerous temp.

Did you check ventilation (main fans) of laptop, is there everything ok?

Re: dangerous temps?

Definitely should check the fans for dust debris. If you can pop off the fan screws and blow it out, go for it man, however the easiest solution is to get one of those laptop coolers (I prefer passive) But active are good to.

Re: dangerous temps?

The good news is that those AMD CPUs can withstand some serious punishment, I've seen them hit and survive temps of over 100 C, but by all means, as SeraphicSorcerer said, check the vents and see if you can remove the backplate to access the interior and clean up the fans and heatsinks.

If you are going to open the laptop, make sure it is unplugged and with the battery removed before you do so.

Re: dangerous temps?

thanks guys i will open it soon, but as i mentioned above its already on a laptop cooler, with 2 80mm fans blowing air into the laptop, and they fit where the laptop's own fan is positioned. and i can feel the hot air blow out of the back, when it isn't on the laptop cooler.

I'm lazy .

They might manage to shave a few degrees off, but nothing substantial. You could improve their effects by making some extra holes, but more dust would get in there without filters.

Re: dangerous temps?

My sister has an HP Pavillion laptop that would overheat constantly (and reboot) unless there's a laptop cooloer underneath it. I don't even know why they don't design it to dissapate more heat. The only vent it has is an inch and a quarter vent on the back.

She just called me and said that it died. ugh. Warranty just expired 3 weeks ago. lol.

Model?

Probably the video chipset wasn't getting enough cooling. Really, external cooling doesn't help your internal components much, it just makes the external casing and keyboard cooler to the touch.

Just to clarify, I'm not saying cooling pads are useless, they just don't solve the real problem here in these cases. They sure can make operating much more comfortable.

Re: dangerous temps?

the mobility chip is able to take punishment..... so is amd but the amd chip riding the 90*C mark is much to high...

it's like the Southbridge/northbridge chip that's causing you the restart.... nearly identical acer laptop would hit over 115*C on the northbridge/southbridge and instantly shut down that sucker would get smoking hot

Did it have an 8XXX chipset? I believe you can get a supervisor involved as those motherboards had that pesky Nvidia thing, and still get THAT SPECIFIC part replaced. You just need to get past the first tier support. You as a consumer have the right to request That. Believe me, I've done it with Dell, and HP.

Re: dangerous temps?

I spoke to a supervisor but still didn't budge
They said the recall cut-off was for dv6500 and mine was dv6700. (apparently the ones that could blow up but not the ones that still heat up and killed the system but not user :/). Although I must admit, I don't sound very convincing or intimidating whenever I talk on the phone. lol

I ended up just buying my sister a new laptop yesterday (lol so much for getting new gear for myself. New expenses always come up whenever I have money saved). I asked around the local laptop repair services and they all unanimously recommend a Toshiba laptop so I went with that.

What else can I salvage from this dead HP laptop? I already took out the RAM, HDD and the DVD-drive. Can I take the screen and do a little DIY project and attach it to the side of a tower?

ah damn I just googled if I could hack the LCD and use it. It turns out I have to get some sort of additional hardware (which ironically, costs as much as an actual LCD) to get it to work outside of the laptop.

Even the slim DVD drive needs a $12 adapater so I can use connect it to a SATA connection. lol.

Damn you notebook companies!!!

lol I'm horrible at reselling/buying stuff online (unless its a legitimate online store). I'm not a paranoid man but I'm pretty sure I'm going to get scammed. lol I got scammed before buying a used HD and I got scammed buying a router.

Re: dangerous temps?

My sisters old laptop (HP dv9000) died about 5 months ago, just out of warranty. Apparently its a common problem for the motherboards or VGA in them to just go kaputt, with HP recognising this and not doing anything about it.

Could be related to the thermal pad they use, or the gap in between the heatsink and chip, that's present in some models I have seen.
