Old M9700 not booting all the way

Hello everyone,

Recently I have had trouble with my Alienware Aurora M9700 in that it does not find the HDD's. For a lil background on what happened, I had just installed the OS and was installing programs, and shortly after I started defragmenting the drives. I walked away for a few minutes and come back to a black screen that tells me, "Reboot and select proper boot device." I have checked the boot settings and they do not see either HDD that is installed on this computer.

As for the what I think is the problem:......motherboard..... I have tested the hard drive connecting board along with the ram and both HDD's to find then all in working condition. I am however able to run a windows from a usb thumb drive.

I have heard that the motherboards in these laptops burn out, which ironically happened to when I first bought it. I guess what I'm asking is more or less for some trouble shooting help or a comment if my diagnosis is correct? Tips?
