Right, I'm going to start by apologising, because I know absolutely NOTHING about computers and such. I can use them well enough but when it comes down to it, I can't really do anything without a step-by-step guide or something.

So, onto my question/problem/whatever you want to call it. I recently got an Acer Aspire 5310, and I'm happy with that. It works, I can use Microsoft Office and play internet games and such. Problem is, I really want to play Amnesia: The Dark Descent. I tried downloading the demo and it didn't work, so I went to the official Amnesia troubleshooting forums and I'm fairly certain it's to do with the graphics (bearing in mind I'm only using the crappy built-in-chip or whatever it is). Now even with the apparently simple instructions on how to maybe, possibly make it work, I feel lost and confused XD

I was wondering if I could get any help from here? I mean, if people are needing more information then you'd probably need to tell me how I could get that information ^^; Like I said, not too good with computers...

So yeah, that's about it. Any help would be appreciated, even if it's a recommendation for something better to buy or something like that.

there are a few variations of the 5310 series acer aspire lineups..

can you give specifics.... exact model perhaps (i beleive it'll be either Intel which is most likely or ATI)

If it's intel.... well..... beyond installing the latest direct from intel Graphics drivers which SHOULD work on the acer laptop..... and installing the latest directX..... i'd say the rest of it would run in the realms of proper game support..

if it's ati.... latest drivers should also work..... recently i've been able to install the latest mobility drivers straight away on acer laptops without using the mod

If you can give as much details... version of windows and hardware and such about the laptop.. should help considerably.

Going by the stickers on the front, It says it's Windows Vista Basic and Intel, so I'll go with that. As far as hardware I have none except a 500gb external hard drive, but I just use that for file storage and back-ups.

One other question, when you say it doesnt work... what happens? How far into the install/launch process do you get? Are there any error messages when trying to play?

If your Acer can run this game, and this game released September 8, 2010, my first advice is to update directx, just google dxwebsetup.exe (download/run dxwebsetup.exe, few "next" clicks/finish).

Instead of guessing which 5310 all Obrum needs to do is flip over the laptop, and look on the bottom. The exact model will be listed there (should be something like LX.4xxxx). Once we get that it's easier to pinpoint exact things to recommend doing as right now it could be either a Celeron or a Centrino running the thing, or have 512mb or 2GB of RAM.

Now, there is one thing I'm almost positive on: it's running an onboard Intel 945 graphics chip (the GMA950). For this the only option for you (other than the official drivers from Intel which never get updated anymore) would be to try out the modded gaming drivers on THIS page (for Vista 32bit first grab the 1.1E, and if those don't work grab the Alpha 1 driver near the top. Version 1.2 is still in beta, but almost finished). Note: if you install the modded drivers be sure to first uninstall the old ones, reboot, then install the modded driver. If you don't things won't work properly. The other option is a program called GMABooster, however is not free (donating gets you a serial key).

There's not much else you can do to be frank.

yeah when it comes tothe GMA950 or intel onboard graphics that isn't part of the i3 or higher cpu's...... generally your out of luck and cannot do anything but replace the laptop with something that has the i3 or better intel gpu which works quite well.... or better get a ati/nvidia solution that is dx10 or higher supported.
