adding ram
Hey guys,
So a friend of mine wanted to speed up his computer and decided to get more ram for his laptop which has an expansion slot available. but upon installing the new module it hasn't been recognized by the computer. Does he need to clear CMOS? or is it likely a BIOS issue? HP elitebook2530p |

Re: adding ram
How much amount of memory did it have at first?, and How much memory has he installed there?
Furthermore, it is important to know the operating system that he uses. |

Re: adding ram
Sounds like the module isn't in all the way or that it is showing up but you can't see it, CPUID would likely be able to tell you if the module is there. Otherwise maybe the slot is dead... Although depending on the version of 7 Ultimate (32 or 64) all of the memory might not show up to begin with. It will likely show up ~3GB in 32bit OS's.

Re: adding ram
MANY laptops i've dealt with from acer to hp to toshiba.. and don't get me started on dells....... they are horrible...... sometimes refuse to either boot... or recognize typical standard ram modules..... specially if they are not the EXACT speed/cas/latencies that they want EVEN if you remove the other stick and leave the new one in.
Case in point, recent toshiba laptop... came with 512mb of DDR2 PC4200 ram updated the bios to 2010 removed the 512mb stick and inserted a kingston 2gb DDR2 PC6400... no boot.. period.... odd.. inserted patriot 2gb DDR2 PC6400 .. still nothing out of curiousity inserted a 1gb PC5300 i had sitting here as a known working module and WAS the same exact brand as the already excisting toshiba had installed.... still no boot.. grab a generic no-name brand PC4200 module .. fired right up.. So after fiddling for ages.. found i could only ever install.. PC4200 ram in it... (and you have any idea how hard it is to find 2gb or 1gb PC4200? for notebook/laptops no less...... bloody hard, actually still can't get anything today for a decent price) The dell case.... installed the memory.. booted up... and..... wait no change in memory capacity.. tried with only the one new stick.... and.... wouldn't boot.. complained no memory.. I know it works fine because i stuck it into an asus laptop and fired up no issues. In the DELL case.. i had to actually order the 10x more expensive... 1/2 sized module directly from dell because even with what they insist on using being kingston ram, the stuff i got which was kingston wouldn't boot either... Dell.. insists on you purchasing from them.... even with updated bios.. boy the pissed me off and my customer... who had to pay through the nose for LESS (512mb module for Dell's $210 vs the 1gb module i had for $90 AT THE TIME) And lastly... it could be just a dud... as that happens unfortunately....
