Lenovo W-510... a little surprised.

Ok, I got a new laptop from Lenovo and I'm actually a little surprised by the thing. It's a Lenovo ThinkPad W-510. It's a duel CPU quad core Intel i7 machine with a Nvidia Quadro FX 880M and 8 gigs of ram.

I was using a Dell Lattitude E6400 for work purposes before that and when we were told that we were moving to Lenovo's from now on, I was a little disappointed. I've had ThinkPads in the past and wasn't a huge fan of them at all.

As mentioned above, I was a little surprised on what the specs were and how quiet this thing is and it's a beast processor for a laptop. Opening up Task Manager and seeing 8 cores in a laptop kind of amazed me. It's been over a month now of constantly running except for weekends and hasn't had a problem what's so ever.

I just thought I'd throw this out there as it's a pretty decent machine and it's running SolidWorks 2011 smooth as silk.

It is not exaggeration to say ThinkPads build quality is legendary.
You may find laptop with similar specs for a lot cheaper, but the build quality is simply unbeatable.

wait..

if it's an i7... therefore has HT..... it would have 8 Core/Threads showing up in the task manager... if it's a dual i7, it would have 16...

I'm a bit confused by your initial statement.

Ahhhh then that must be all it is then. Must be a single cpu with HT enabled (the awe factor for this just went down a couple of notches). I run AMD at home and all previous machines we ordered for work were Intel Centrino Duo chips or some other variant and I haven't paid attention to Intel chips so that would be part of my ignorance. Thanks Judas, guess I'm not to old to learn something after all.

Suppose I should look up what I'm actually using before posting something and looking like an idiot uh?

naw that's ok..

CPU-Z is your friend.. it should tell you 4 cores and 8 cores via HT essentially..

just a single CPU..

still the i7's for as old as they are ...... perform well.. just wish we would have seen some sort of advancement...... intel always stagnates when they clearly have a top dog running the show...... moment amd starts kicking intels ass.. we see massive improvements.
