Hard disc upgrade on Acer Aspire 9300 causing trouble

Hi,
I have recently upgraded the HDD on my Aspire 9300 using Seagate hard disc cloning utility. My old HDD was 80gb, and the new one is 500gb.
Cloning process was not fully successful. It could only be able to copy the recovery partition, therefore I had to install the new HDD without a full cloning could be achieved.
After installing the new HDD into the laptop, I accessed the hidden partition and using alt+f10, installed Vista without a noticeable trouble. However, when I boot to the vista it starts with loads of registry errors, and HDD has very slow read and write performance. Using the recovery DVD I created years ago, I installed it again, it is exactly the same. The vista partition on the old drive is not working in the new larger drive even if I install it from DVD or HDD.
Having failed to fix it I installed windows XP using a standard XP CD. The PC works without any trouble.
Can you explain the errors of my ways and guide me to the right direction?
