Re: Toshiba upgrade trouble

One of the most common reasons why same socket cpu's that are newer generally don't work is due to the bios/motherboard not knowing what it is, doesn't have updated bios information to recognize it resulting in a no boot/no post senario.

So the first thing you'll want to do is.. is stick the old one back in, and make sure the laptop is as up to date as possible.

It's sometimes not a bad idea to see if the manufacturers has a cpu support listed on their website for that specific model.

There are plenty of other possible reason for the issue...

Re: Toshiba upgrade trouble

You will most likely not be able to run that processor on that laptop. Most times laptops are built (in particular the older ones) around a "family" of processors while desktops, the motherboard specifically, can support a wider range of processors within a socket series. In this instance, more than likely that laptop will support any of the Intel Pentium 4 M socket 478 mobile series of chips ONLY, which run from 1.4Ghz to 2.6Ghz, and nothing else.

Take a look at THIS page for a full rundown of Intel Pentium 4 M processors. If you want to try upgrading I would stick with the processors on that list.

Edit: I read up on that laptop, and Toshiba noted that they sold it with processors in the 1.4Ghz to 2.0Ghz range. The reason they stopped at that number could be because they consider this to be the "thermal limit" of the laptop, and anything above that speed would generate too much heat, or that the higher CPUs require 5watts more to run, and is pushing the limit of the power supply. Just something to consider when looking for a replacement.
