I am being quite serious when I ask this question....

I have a HP ZV5340 with an AMD Athlon 3400+ CPU in it.Which I know is a fairly strong processor.BUT,it only has a 64MB nVIDIA 440GO! GPU in it.It will run HL2......How?The game isnt pretty but it's very playable and the color and detail aint half bad.Is the processor doing the work?????

Yes, and lots of it. You have intergrated video with that the cpu is always doing majority of the work.

The memory in the GPU stands alone in this machine if that makes any differance...?????

The integrated video is not doing anything if the video card is working, can't have two cards doing the same job (well you can now with SLI). HL2 runs well on most card, even old ones. It can adjust detail and DX levels between 7 - 9 depending on your cards capabilites. The game is just well optimized, its no surprise it runs well on your machine. I would imagine the processor helps a lot, but it is not doing all the work. I can run the game on DX 8.1, all high detail, 800 x 600 with my P4 3.06 with a mobility r9000. The game runs between 30 and 60 fps the whole time.
