laptop ddram upgrade

my laptop currently has 256mb ram and an extra empty slot. i want to know which would give better performance, stability.

buying a single ram of 1gb so having a total of 1.256 gb or buying two rams of 512mb so having a total of 1gb (and throw away that 256mb)

thanks,

Without knowing much about your laptop make and model makes this question slightly difficult to answer completely. This is particularly important, since a lot of laptops have a maximum memory capacity of 1GB. I am assuming that you have checked the documentation, but just wanted to make sure. Also, some laptop manufacturers don't always fit the fastest possible components to the system, so your existing memory could be slower than your potential future purchase? If either of these situations proves true, you should just buy two 512mb SODIMMS and throw away the old stuff (or at least keep it in a cupboard or donate it to a friend!).

If your laptop has got the fastest memory possible already and copes with more than 1GB, you might as well go for the maximum possible. However, having said that, laptops have other performance bottlenecks which mean that more than 1GB probably won't do you any special favours in terms of performance.

There are certainly a couple of things to think about here - I hope I've helped a bit at least. Good luck with it!
