It all depends on the laptop. Sometimes the normal monitoring programs will works, sometimes not. Of the programs I've tested on laptops CPUCool, and HMonitor seem to work. However, both have limitations. HMonitor will tell me what my CPU temps are, plus my mobo temps, and Hard Drive temps, but that's it (no fan speed, or voltage). CPUCool will only tell me the CPU temp, but it also displays voltage, and memory info.

Both programs are not free though, and you'll have to google to find them, but I'd say give HMonitor a try first. It's free to try.

Edit: If your laptop is based on an Intel chipset you may be able to use Intels Active Monitor, however I've had very, very limited success with it.

If you have a dell, check out I8kFanGUI. I have used it and it works great. One thing to keep it mind, be careful with some of these programs that allow you to change fan speeds, it can be dangerous for your computer. Just a heads up.

Very nice indeed!

This is exactly the type of program that would be needed. Someone has taken and modded (in this case, as per the description at the web site) an existing program or coded their own program using proprietary data about the sensors in a particular laptop.

BTW, it's supposed to work on the C610 in my sig below. I'll check it out. Thanks!

Update...

Downloaded, installed, settings for GPU and hardware fan sensors found and implemented. Excellent.

Works not only to change the fan speeds, but monitors in graph form and numeric readout the CPU temp (mine is 52C), GPU temp (49C), and HD temp (58C) all at CPU usage of 1% (basically idle... just the monitoring program running).

Exactly what was asked for by Hawgshead. This is definitely the ticket if you've got a Dell.

You could try some of the programs that TipStaff mentioned.

BTW, the hottest component in my Dell below is consistently the hard drive (60C) - how about that? It's been running that way for over 2 years now...

SpeedFan might work. It's freeware.
http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php

It can monitor you motherboard, cpu, hardrives and video card temps. It also monitors fan speed, voltage on motherboard and voltage on video card. If your motherboard supports it, it can reduce fan speed. You have to set it up correctly as it can detectect some not connected sensors that show wrong temps.

I've never tested it on a laptop but it works well on my pc.
