hmm... you might be able to order it if you call gateway over the phone as opposed to doing things online only, but shipping might be expensive as heck. I don't know what to tell you, but even given the suckiness of my last gateway laptop (this one was a free replacement of that one) I must say that this one is MUCH better, and fits what you want and might be better than the gericoms you have picked out for a little less (depending on the exchange rate), but I don't know who Gateway does their business, so you might not be able to get this over there, good luck in your search, but I don't think I'll be able to help you much more.

I found something...
...and it's definitly *very* close to what I want. Plus, it's available where I live at acceptable price.
Forcebook Ace 15G3 - 3kg (6.6 pounds) - sounds pretty portable. It offers: - Centrino 1.6 + 512MB DDR - quite nice, plus ipw2200 driver supports the wireless card - Radeon 9700 (M) 256M - a bit of an overkill, but it's 9700 and that's as far as I care - AC97 Rev 2.3 Compliant Codec - doesn't say much, but probably Realtek ALC203 or ALC250 - 15.4" WSXGA+ (1680x1050) - it's not 17", but it's definitly a quality display and also is 16:9 (other extras: bluetooth, card reader...) I can get it here for 1600$ (without WinXP - big plus for me), which seems a good price for a this laptop, where only big difference from perfect laptop for me would be soundcard (but I could stand that). However, I'm not sure about Forcebook - this is the first time I hear about them. Are their laptops any good at all?

Quite true, however A2ZS is not in my consideration until it's supported by ALSA. It probably will eventually get supported, but even if it doesn't, it's not the end of the world, because I'm pretty sure Echo Indigo (IO/DJ) is a good soundcard as well, and it's supported by ALSA. It's a bit more expensive than A2ZS PCMCIA, though.

I have posted a poll here. Any suggestions or opinions are welcome. I know this is far from what I originally targeted for, but some things changed so I can't target that high anymore.
Thanks for your help so far.

The ultra in the Dell XPS would outperform that in the alienware IIRC.

Asus Z71V. This is the Cyberpower s4-6500.
I just ordered mine. 1534 usd for DISPLAY LCD : 15.4" WSXGA TFT LCD DISPLAY 1680x1050 CPU : IntelŪ PentiumŪ M Processor 760 @ 2.0GHz 533FSB 2MB Cache MOTHERBOARD : Intel Alviso 915PM & ICH6-M Chipset Mainboard MEMORY : 1GB PC4200 DDR2-533 SODIMM MEMORY HARD DRIVE : 60GB 7200RPM ULTRA ATA 100 HARD DRIVE VIDEO CARD : 16X PCI-Express NVIDIA 6600 - 128MB Video OPTICAL DRIVE : 16X/4X CD-RW/DVD+RW COMBO DRIVE SOUND : BUILT-IN AC 97 SOUND Price: $1758.00 I think that they are listing the wrong spec for the sound. This is the alviso mobo, so...it's what you want. The only thing is that the screeen is only 15.4 wide screen. For me, this is plenty big enough for gaming. Great machine great price. I took off the hundred bucks for the OS, I already have a legit copy of windows pro. I also want to load everything myself . Also, they are having a 5% off deal, which brought the price down to 1534 with free shipping. Go to -- > http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?p=779016 to check out reviews of this machine. |
