Everytime I start my laptop up it says that it has found new Hardware - a PCI device which I need to install the driver for. Problem is I don't know what it is talking about. I tried installing the driver from the CD I got when I purchased the computer but it doesn't seem to find anything. Anyone got a clue what the thing is on about - I am seriously getting close to throughing this thing out the window!!!!!!

If you are running WinXP then one can usually choose it not to ask for a driver again, and if you aren't missing anything then that's the easy way out. Could be some type of interface like firewire port, integrated memory card reader, or whatever.

Is there anything you know it's meant to have, that is missing?
Check the details for it in device manager - the VEN and DEV numbers often lead to the original maker of the hardware or critical components of, and often a reference driver can be found. |

I think the only thing I am missing is something for my SanDisk memory card slot as that won't work anymore. When I put the card in nothing happens and it used to come up in Windows Explorer etc. Don't think it is the modem as that is working now.
In device manager all it says is PCI Device under Other devices and the location is PCI Slot 3 (PCI bus 2, device 4, function 2). |

Looks like you likely found your problem (the memory card slot problem you are having). In a laptop the PCMCIA slots (and likely whatever slot you have for your card reader) work through the cardbus controller to access the PCI bus - on this laptop it is PCI Bus 2 as well.
You can enter the device manager and disable the device so it won't trouble you with annoying messages any more, but the real solution is to fix the problem. Do you know for sure the slot itself is bad, or just the memory card? You can test by plugging in a known good memory card and see if it shows up in Explorer. If still no joy, then you'll need to have the laptop repaired. If the laptop needs repair, hopefully you're still within your warranty period...

Does it have a "Details" tab?
Or try Everest - www.lavalys.com - that may identify the device and even point you toward a driver |

In device manager the properties tab just says the location is PCI Slot 3 (PCI bus 2, device 4, function 2) and the rest is unkown including the driver details.
Typically the laptop run out of Warranty in April, and I have tried other memory cards and none of them work. Nothing comes up in explorer as though it is just not there. I am pretty sure it just needs the driver though. |

If you get a driver from your laptop manufacturer it could very well clear up the whole problem - XP evidently doesn't have a built in driver for your card slot.
Have you reinstalled the OS lately?

sorry to sound stupid but what is OS. It has all just been reinstalled after a major crash so yeah probably. Will try to get in touch with Toshiba.

OS is an abbreviation for Operating System.
Did you happen to notice or not if your card slot stopped working at the same time you reinstalled XP after your recent crash? If so, that is more evidence that a driver is what is needed to solve your problem.

yeah that is when it started. I tried to install the drivers from the Toshiba website, but these didn't seem to work. There were a couple to reinstall in a certain order but no luck.

You could email them at their support site to see what they come back with - may lend some insight...
Edit: Ah, looks like you might need to call Toshiba, they have a toll-free number to call on their product support page or contact a local dealer, also available to search for on their support page here: http://www.toshiba.com/tai-new/Support.jsp If the drivers were installed properly and the slot still doesn't work, you could delete (remove) the devices in Device Manager and try to install the driver again upon the first reboot when you get the Install Wizard. Just point the installer to your downloaded files. If that still doesn't work then call Toshiba or a dealer. BTW, what is the model of your laptop?

Did a little more digging...
The actual support page for your laptop looks to be here: http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.c...&action=search Looks like a European model. Did you try the smartcard drivers for XP (or whatever version of Windows you are running) from this page for your laptop?

yeah these are the ones I tried, but there are three and it says something about the order you need to install them in. I couldn't get them to work.

Normally, my next step would be to run diagnostic, and there is a file at the Toshiba support site for your laptop called "PC Diagnostic Tool", version 3.06 dated just last year that you might want to try next - it could give helpful information - or not.
If that program doesn't help, my advice would be to take your laptop to a competant repair shop - but it would be interesting to see if the diagnostic finds anything first...

Click on the link I gave you in the previous post in this thread and scroll down the page a bit, about halfway. The titles for the files are in alphabetical order, on the first page at least. It is dated 12/11/04 and the title is "PC Diagnostic Tool". Version number is 3.0.6 for Windows XP.
By the way, what version of Windows are you running?

OK ran the test and it said everything passed, typical.
I am on windows XP. Still in device manager it says PCI Device, unkown and that there are no drivers for it. I unistalled it and rebooted it found the hardware again but again not the driver. I tried searching the internet for the driver and used all the CDs I was given when I bought the damn computer but nothing. So glad you are helping me |

Yeah, that's the shame of diagnostic software. They work from the inside out and can't often check a port of any type properly without a dongle to plug into the port - but thought it was worth a shot...
It's difficult at this point to for me to give much more advice you could do yourself kellyred...hmmm. You may need to take it to a shop or get a friend who knows computers/Windows well and put your heads together.
