Turion Notebooks
I'm looking into getting a new laptop purely for software development. Having my programming tools on the same pc that has that x800xl is very distracting, and I'd like to leave my hectic dorm room at a whim and program somewhere quieter.
I'm aiming to spend between 1000-1300. I've been looking solely at amd turion processors, specifically the MT ones at 25w. I also need a minimum of 1gb memory, so most uncustomized laptops won't cut it (2x256 dimms means replacing all that memory). Does anyone have any recommendations on finding a notebook that meets these requirements? My current winner is the Asus A6U from rjtech.com which is about 1250 and has everything I want. Acer has some nice ones too but they all seem to be turion ML (35w). Can anyone comment on the effect the extra wattage has on battery life? Would a sempron be a smart choice instead? Compiling is a pretty intense operation so I don't want something stinky and low-end like the celeron class. Thanks!

Compaq v2312 is quite the sexy little laptop
![]() And as for the Sempron....you don't wanna go there, I don't think. Go for the Turion or the Centrino. Another good choice for a Centrino based platform is the HP dv4000 series (4130, 50, and 70) |

I went with the turion. Bought it from www.rjtech.com last night for a total of $1249 USD. They have a back to school special with free shipping (glee!).
Asus A6U AMD Turion 64 MT-30 1 gig ram (1 dimm) 40gb 5400rpm 8mb cache HD windows xp pro sp2 It should make for a very nice dev laptop.
