Lap Top Configuration Questions

HI

Thanks for your time.

My Dell 8500 2.4 P4M took a crap and will cost too much to fix.

Have been looking at a replacement and have some questions regarding GPU variations in the lptop arena.

What is the take on he ATI X700 and X800 line?
If you wre to chose between a system offering say an X800 ATI or NV Go 6800 Ultra (both 256 mb cards) which wold you go with?

Last, is the ATI 9700 128mb card still even relevant as a graphics card to consider in a new system (if the user was interested in gaming as well as daily "work")?

Thanks for any help

9700 will still do mild "gaming"...but if thats a big factor, no, skip it.

As for nvidia vs ATi, I'd personally go with nvidia by a long shot in the mobile market.

yeah the new shooters when they hit will need more than the 9700...I have a 9600 pro and that won't be much good either. It'll run, but the performance will suffer.

It looks like the X800 and the Go6800 are comparable chips - both 12 pipes, close in clock speed - but I don't mod drivers either and am sure you have good reasons for leaning to Nvidia. Why pick the Go6800 so strongly over the X800 - pixel/vertex shaders 3 maybe (the x800 has ver. 2...)?

For mobile gaming though, I would go with a minimum of an X700 chip, the rest won't cut the new stuff to come over the life of a new laptop, and even an x700 will likely be underpowered in a year or so for the newest games. Get the most you can right off the bat as most laptops can't be upgraded (even those very few that can be upgraded don't have much, if anything, available).

Well every thing i've read in the past says that ATi was a year or two ahead of nVidia on the mobile stuff, but i've also read good reviews on the 6800 go. I personally prefer ATi and I would go with the x800 if it were me, it doesn't hurt that the x800 is often cheaper than the 6800 go on the same comp.

On a second note, how high of spec do you want to game with, I have the x700 mobility 128 mb on my system and it flies on HL2 and D3, (max specs on HL2 and Ultra with no AA for D3) so for next years top games I will still be playing at rather good specs, mayber not max, but good anyway. and the price difference can be massive.
