custom vid drivers for nvidia gpu notebooks?

hey guys, i've had my inspiron 9300 for about 7 months and i love it, but the last video driver update from dell was in november... is anyone aware of a way to get more up to date drivers going on this thing?
i was under the impression that you couldnt update the drivers yourself, you had to wait for the manufacturer to do it for you, but someone was telling me about a custom driver out there for ati cards.. i was wondering about something similar for nvidia?
