Wanna play DVD's under Linux?

You need the XINE player first. Then download a DVD plugin linked on that page - I use CaptainCSS's D5D plugin. Installation is pretty straightforward - but you do need to have the XINE development libraries installed along with the generic compiler stuff (the compiler stuff is installed by default for most distro's).

Upon launcing the XINE player, the DVD button has now been replaced with the D5D button. Click this to start playing

DISCLAIMER: Last I checked, decrypting CSS encoded DVD's was still illegal under Linux as no-one has actually bought a CSS licence. Personally, this is bad as I should be able to play DVD's on whatever platform I choose - the MPAA think I'm gonna copy it. Actually I just wanna *watch* it.

personally i was jealous when i found under xine that i couldn't use the dvd menus and
some winblows box can. needless to say i got over it: ogle is a dvd player for linux
supporting dvd menus, though not quite as rich in features xine
(it's a younger project by about a year).

another project worthy of note is the videolan project, a project where the player has
been taken to a client-server model, allowing for streaming of dvds and various mpeg
formats over the network. all sorts of operating systems are supported.

I find mplayer, http://www.mplayerhq.hu/homepage/ to be the best player for video media, including dvd's, especially since they now have a gui. I think though that it's the hardest to get installed (beside the real magic hollywood+ dvd decoder card drivers).

As far as ease of install I would have to say Videolan. I ahven't used it in almost a year but the last time I used it, it was just a simple tar zxvf -xxxx.tar.gz -> ./configure -> make -> make install , type of deal. I have found xine to be picky on the css versions when compiling it.

Mplayer is probably the best one. But it is a little tricky to install the first time.
