Winmodem trouble in RH8

I just installed RedHat Linux 8.0, the kernel being 2.4.18-14. I have winmodem unfortunately, and trying to get it to work under linux hasn't been fun. It's a Conexant model, from what i've gathered through their "listmodem" app, It's Vendor ID is 127A , and it's Device ID is 1025. I downloaded the drivers, from their site for linux, and amazingly enough, under minicom it will connect. For a second. It will beep, and then say NO CARRIER. What does this mean, and is there a way that I can fix it? When i installed the drivers, they said i could find the modem under /dev/ttySHSF0. However, using SetSerial, i can't find anything...i don't remember the error message...but it would say like it dosen't exist. When i tried other examples for Setserial /dev/ttyS0, it would respond with a UART (16650 something around that) and an IRQ of 4. On my BIOS all my IRQ's are set to AUTO. On my windows partition it says that the modem is on COM3, so i would think that would be /dev/ttyS2. But if i put this in linux, it will come out saying that there is an unknown UART, and an IRQ of 4, and from what i've read, it means that this "port" dosen't exist. Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

Ouch - winmodems are a right PITA. Have you tried the drivers linked below?

Cool!

According to http://www.netfilter.org/~marc/dl/listmodem_guide.pdf you need the HCF driver and not the HSF driver. Remove the driver you have installed and install the correct one.

According to the installtion instructions the serial port is /dev/ttySHCF0

Good luck!
