You could try one of Mandriva's 2008 One cd's "live" and see if it works out of the box before installing..There are both a Gnome and KDE version. More info at the wiki.

suse has worked very well for me.
got ati drivers set up and everything.

ubuntu and suse both have great wiresless support.
