Linux needs better Package Management

So here I am in SUSE Linux 10.2, a really good Distro.

One of the apps I'm trying to install says it needs the GNU compiler. So, I pop into the INSTALL SOFTWARE app and type GNU in the search field. Nada. I'm like "huh"?

I do a Google Search and type in GNU and it says GCC, the GNU compiler collection on one of the reference pages. So, I type in GCC and VOILA (not to be confused with Viola) - a bunch of GNU stuff comes up.

The term GNU is right there in the description, but does it come up by default? Nope.

Silly. Just plain silly.

That's the way it should be done

The SQL search sounds like its exactly what you want.

Good link - thanks.

It does seem like such an obvious thing - to actually be able to search via file name and description. I guess it's another one of those small issues that keeps folks frustrated with Linux in general terms. It just shouldn't be that difficult or inconvenient. Simple, thoughtful touches might be all that Linux needs to help broaden its appeal.

It's really cool to be able to print and copy files over Samba from inside Suse which is running inside Parallels which is running under OS X.
