??? Bit off Topic....but wondering if anyone could help me with a LINUX problem?

got an assignment from computer class today and need to find a linux system that fully supports the following system requirements as well as full network capabilities. if anyone knows which linux OS that works with this, please post a reply, greatly appreciated because im currently stuck and cannot find the right version (grade is riding on this )

The Os needs to meet these requirements:

32MB ram
120mhz cpu
1gig HD
GUI interface
Full websupport (Java/Flash)

sorry if this is offtopic from this forum...unsure where else to post it. thanks for any help you can supply.

Well, I think any modern distro will support that...

If you're a Linux beginner (as it looks) you should try Mandrake Linux. You can go to Mandrake's website, download the ISOs, burn them on CD and install from there or you can probably buy the commercial version at a shop near you.

There are other nice beginner distros, like RedHat or SuSe, but I personally think Mandrake is the most user-friendly.

Good luck.

Those are hardware requirements. Although, with 32meg it's going to struggle when running X imo.
As the man said, checkout Mandrake or ease of use or RedHat (my fav) for decent server config stuff

I think both Mandrake 9.1 and RH 9.0 are compiled for i586, so be sure to have at least a Pentium/K6-2 in your system. This should be specified in the readme files on the first CD of any distro.

Slackware will be compatible with any x86 CPU and can fit easily on your 1GB HDD if you strip it up of unnecessary packages. Also, use somehing light for the GUI, like WindowMaker (get KDE or/and Gnome installed to get their libraries and programs, but don't use them as default, they're too memory-demanding).

RH9 has specially compiled kernels and glibc libraries for most architectures (i386, i585, i686, athlon and SMP variants).
Everything else is i386.

so RH9 works fine on i386 platforms

Thanks for all the info.

I know bit about linux...mainly mandrake...guessing i wasnt too clear.

Anyways, i found a version of Redhat and Debian that support the system. Couldn't get Mandrake to run on this machine, nor most of the others.

Give us the gory details of getting a 32-bit OS to work on that hardware - I betcha Winblows won't perform as well on the same spec box

For optimum usage of that machine's resources I would go Gentoo. There is nothing faster or smaller, since you customize it as you want it for your architecture.

There are two problems, though. Installing and configuring it takes a lot of time (and you seem to be in a hurry). And it is rather difficult to install without good knowledge of "real" linux: console. But there's an excelent guide to help you though.

I used to be a Mandrake user and I liked it. It was simple, had nice configuration tools, and came with interesting software. But then I tried Gentoo. Oh man, I absolutely loved it! I optimized everything for my machine! You can install any program (OK, almost any program) with a single command... If you have broadband, Gentoo is an excellent system.

Since then I've setup Gentoo for some friends too

It does take a bit of space to install though, particularly if you make a stage 1 install (everything from scratch), not sure if 1 gig would be enough...

had a hell of a time getting this all to work. Could barely run any Xwindows or a GUI with these systems.

The reason why i need this is in my computer class we have a wad of crappy computers (i.e. those) we we swapping over from win 98 (which barely runs) to a linux distro.

Redhat would install, but ran horribly. Was find without the GUI, but once we started that up...there goes the system, even with minimal things running (no server settings, networking, etc)

Also tried Basic Linux, but needed to install slackware, and that caused problems, instability of some sort, teach couldn't figure out.

Gentoo was the last one on the list, and it performed the best. few problems here and there, but nothing compared to what we had to dick with earlier. Teach going to be digging up some old SIMMs to possibly help these things chug along.

Thanks for all the help, really appreciate it!

btw, most of these have ATI cards...Rage 128 whopping 16 mb of ram and 2x agp

Thanks again!
