X-Windows is what powers KDE and GNOME. I think you meant an XTerm as thats a command prompt in X. I don't use KDE myself, and GNOME installations can be variable. I use RedHat 9 which features GNOME 2 - you're using RH 7 which uses GNOME 1 - or older. As such, I really can't remember the exact steps, but here's some pointers to get an XTerm open for either GNOME or KDE 1) Click the GNOME/KDE icon (default - bottom left of the task bar) 2) Hunt around for "System Terminal" or "X-Terminal" or "Xterm" or even "Command prompt" 3) Click on it 4) Voila - a command prompt or terminal As for getting the Winmodem to work in Linux I've got two words - GOOD LUCK Here's a link to see if you can get it working or not http://www.linmodems.org/ However, I would recommend getting RH 9 as RH7 is now quiet old and out-dated. RH9 is very easy to use - compared to version 7.
