??? No sound in Redhat 9

Hello. I am using redhat 9.0 kernel 2.4.20 & KDE. I have an integrated SiS 7012 PCI Audio Accelerator. Since I don't use sound much on this pc I can't really say when this happened. But a few months ago my sound just stopped working. The major change that happened in that time frame is that I updgraded to the latest stable kernel from redhat (via up2date). Again, as I rareley have my speakers on when using this pc (via a belkin KVM) I can not say if that event is what triggered my trouble.(I did use LILO to go back to two earlier kernels to see if the latest was somehow buggy but I still have no sound) I did some searching on Google, but now I'm more confused than ever. Should I be using alsa, aRts or what?? I really have no idea how to even start troubleshooting this problem so any replies will be greatly appreciated.

TIA

Uhh, you're probably using OSS right now. Snce you're under Redhat, I would try running sndconfig and see if that does anything. Otherwise, you could disable OSS and install the Alsa module. I believe aRts is just a sound server for KDE. Do you get an error when you get to your desktop environment? If the hardware driver isn't install, it will probably say it can't find /dev/dsp. You could run dmesg to see if the device is loaded.

You really want to be using ALSA as it provides for neer sound requirements for mutlimedia. ALSA is also the defacto standard in the new 2.6.0 beta kernels.

Here's a link to the ALSA project with slightly technical instructions on how to get sound working

Aureal devices aren't supported as yet - but drivers are being written.

Sorry
