Radeon 9200 SE - Cannot start X-Window

I am attempting to setup my first Linux system. I have chosen to go with Debian Linux.

So far I am not making great progress. I am to the point where I want to launch the X system, but when I do, it attempts to initilize the ATI card, and it fails, saying the card cannot be found.

I have downloaded and converted the Linux driver from ATI's website and it appears to install successfully.

As I am running this card in a MSI KT6 Delta motherboard, I am wondering if the actual problem is with Debian's inability to support AGP x8?

I have tried installing both Kernel 2.2 and 2.4 from the Woody release.

Any help/suggestions/comments would be greatly appreciated!

Could you post the contents (preferably a link) to your X error log?

hmmm ok I can do that.

I am considering putting in an old Geoforce 2 GTS 32MB AGP card just to see if I can get it to move forward with that...

Will put up a link this evening (KL time)

You can always use the standard X drivers for radeons.
I use them on my laptop and they're solid.

Hopefully I can get OpenGL acceleration in the next version (can get it now, but it causes bad memory leaks after 30 mins of OGL screensavers)
