SATA support in Mandrake 9.2
hey guys my first post
![]() i have used linux before in the past quite a bit and i really love it cause it is way more configurable than windows, but ive allways had a driver issue with something. i want to switch back to linux because i never cancelled my winex subscription and i wana try out some of the newly supported games on linux like max payne 2. problem is i have a new seagate 120Gb SATA hard drive and im quite sure SATA wasnt supported when i was using linux. But i did some research and apparently the newest kernal comes with promise (its a company) SATA drivers. The distro i want to use is Mandrake, does anyone know if mandrake 9.2 comes with the newest kernal? and does anyone know if my HD will be supported? thanks guys ![]() JJ |

Out of the box - no it doesn't. However SATA is backwards compatible iirc so you can install Mandrake using the standard 2.4.x kernel and then up to 2.6 to get the benefit of using the SATA driver.
Or you can use the Gentoo Linux 2.6 experimental LiveCD - provided you have a fast 'net connection. This CD should have the SATA drivers compiled into the kernel

yea looks like mandrake 9.2 comes with 2.4.22 and says its ready for 2.6.0 but how can i install mandrake on a device that is not supported then upgrade to support it?
i have a decent connection 512k ADSL so downloading is not a problem... are there any distros that have 2.6.0 standard? because otherwise there doesnt seem a way i can install linux on my SATA drive. thanks for the help JJ EDIT: just spent some time google searching i found that there is an experimental release of gentoo that has 2.6.0 as standard it is on my favourate mirror http://mirror.pacific.net.au/linux/G...al/x86/livecd/ what is live cd? is it just the latest experimental build or something else? sorry i have never used gentoo |

You misunderstand.
Linux will install on a SATA device - and work fine. However, it will not use the interface to it's fullest. You should be able to install Mandrake 9.2 fine
