New linux install

I'm new to linux. I finally am getting brave and am gonna take the plunge. I have tried to install previous versions before and never got too far. I think I want to try to install slackware. My question is how many cd's do I need. I went to download the .ISO and I see like 6 different cd's. Do I really need cd1, cd2, and cd3? Or do I jsut get cd1? Also how hard is this to install? Thanks!

That depends on which distro you're using.

For example, my Gentoo Linux install is 1 CD (70 meg download) but it requires a fast internet connection to download the rest.

RH9 (last CD based distro I used) required all 3 binary CD's.

As to installing it - well RH is easy to install and Gentoo hard to install. Again, it depends on the distro you want to try and use.

I'd say that you need a bit more know-how to install a working Linux system compared to a Windows system.
You need to know
1) How to parition a disk.
2) What hardware you have (video card, sound card and network card mainly)

I'm not a pc newbie. Partitioning a disk is cake, and I built this box so I know what is in it. I'm just not sure where to start is all.

I'd see if you can find a slackware forum and ask the question about how many CD's you need - I don't recall many active slackware users here.
