XFree86 4.4.0

The new version of XFree86 4.4.0 is out. You can get it ar the official site. Don't expect it to see anytime soon in your favourite distro as there are some problems with the new licence not being GPL compatible.

UberLord will become famous soon enough

www.freedesktop.org is probably going to be the new XServer when it becomes stable

Yeah I sure hope this happens soon and that we will se more progress in development with it. For now they also host the latest versions of XFree86 with all files with new licence stripped out. There are not many of them for now.

Now if they only had 3D acceleration with my Radeon under FreeBSD, I'd be good to go.

Hopefully they'll get 4.4.0 on the ports system soon.

I was under the impression that the new license was't that bad, just more annoying. I wouldn't care so much for XFree86 is there was a better, free implementation out there. Freedesktop looks promising, but is incomplete I assume.

The problem with the new license is that it requires inclusion of credits in derived works.

Now this itself is very bad in the open-source world; can you imagine if every open-source project required the same? We'd have gigantic credit files. What's worse, and I'm not sure if they require this or not, you would probably have to include the credits in commercials, ads and such.

But the main problem here is GPL-compatibility. And it isn't compatible because the GPL imposes a series of conditions and in the end states "you may not impose any further restrictions than the ones listed above" or something similar to that in legalese.

So, if it isn't GPL-compatible, that means it cannot be included in the free (as in speech) downloadable versions of any distro.

Hopefully they will reconsider. If not, then I hope Freedesktop.org's XServer gains a lot more contributors

This is required for the new XFCE version, but Ati doesn't have drivers for 4.4 .

How is your experience with Nvidia drivers?

XFCE is a Window Manager and as such doesn't require any "driver version", just a working graphics subsystem provided by X

X can be XFree86, X11org or others.

Personally, I cannot get any ATI drivers to work with my 9800 pro 512 megger under Gentoo in 3D.
2D is fine.

hmmpf, but Swaret found that xfree 4.4 was a dependency of xfce 4.05. Guess swaret was wrong.

OK, so there's no reason to use xfree 4.4 ?

XFCE depends on X libraries

XFree86 provides X libraries
X11org provides X libraries

Currently the two are 100% compatible

There's no reason to use XFree86 4.4 over X11org
