music cd not playing in RedHat
First, I am a total newbie to the Linux scene so I guess I will post some stupid questions in this forum from now on. OK, this is the first one.
I just installed a RedHat Linux Ent. just to learn a thing or two about this. I can't play music CD. I can't hear any sound from my speaker. I have Audigy 2 ZS sound card which has been detected properly and selected as a primary sound devise over the onboard NForce1 sound. I also plays the test sound alright and I can hear it. The thing is that in the 'CD player' window, I see a time counter count the elapsed time for a track so I guess the CD runs properly. It even displays cd and track title. I just don't hear any sound. What can I do? A little help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. |

Has the CD input been muted or are it's volume levels too low? You can check this in the volume control.
Also, do you get CD audio via the IDE cable or by an internal CD audio cable? Windows 2000 and newer can get audio via the IDE cable on most modern motherboards, cables and drives but I'm not sure if Linux can do this yet.

Thanks for the reply.
The volume control is not muted at all for CD and Master as well. The CD rom is connected with the CD audio cable and the IDE cable. Any other ideas? Thanks |

Can I assume that the CD audio cable is connected to the same soundcard?
Does this work in Windows if you have it installed? Does it work off a Knoppix CD? (That's a Linux CD only distro - download and the burn CD, boot off the CD and a linux desktop is right there!)

You could always try going into the command line and typing aumix and turn up those volume settings, I found theres some settings in there that aren't in the volume control in gnome or kde. Also try using xmms, go to Http://www.xmms.org or if you want the direct link: http://www.xmms.org/files/1.2.x/rpm/....10-1.i386.rpm and download the rpm redhat/fedora, and to install it go to root by doing su and your password on the command line, and type rpm -i xmms-1.2.10-1.i386.rpm and then you can type xmms on the command line or go into your menu in kde or gnome or whatever you use, and go to sound/video and click xmms, try that out, its the best mp3 player out there for linux, it can play cd audio too, I love it

Try to check if you are using ALSA and try to configure it.
