I installed Fedora Core 3...

...and I just have one word - AWESOME! This thing is actually USABLE! I installed Real Player RPM without a hitch (like wow! I actually installed an application in Linux) and I downloaded VLC (for FC2, but I hope it will work) and I'm trying it next time I log in.

So, what's the good thing:
- almost everything works (sound, 2d graphics (3d is really slow... I can't even play Tux racer normally), mouse, you name it)
- dual boot works without a hitch
- partitioning can't be any simpler
- installs relatively quickly
- package selection is very simple
- GNOME 2.8 is really nice and I actually like it more then KDE now
- OpenOffice.org has cool icons

What isn't so good:
- refresh rate won't go over 85Hz (works under windows) - set the correct monitor and the correct gfx card and xfree86.config says up to 160Hz sync supported - any suggestions?
- my ISDN card won't work: it runs a wizard, I select the correct model from the list, but it doesn't work; why I can't select the one that installation has detected and just create new connection for it?)
- I can't play audio CDs (it just says access error or reading error; WAV/MP3 work if I install proper codec (well, RealPlayer plays them))
- multichannel sound won't work (but I can live without it)
- apps are sometimes crashy (well, I can handle that)

I would like to know:
- how to read FAT/NTFS disks (is it possible at all) ?
- how to set up networking with Windows PCs (is it possible at all) ?
- how to install WINE (RPM, perhaps) ;-) ?

Also:
- are there any ATI beta linux drivers that work with X.org 6.8 (and if not, are there any planned) ?

I said a year or two ago that sometime in the future Linux will be my primary OS... even I'm still a Linux newbie, it seems that with this simplicity of FC3 it could happen in less then a year...

What accelerator card do you have?

And your questions:

a) You need to mount the partitions with mount commad.
b) It's possible to do it, install samba package and configure it (it's really easy indeed)
c) I don't know if wine is in the fedora installation discs, but you can download it from http://www.winehq.com/site/download.

If you need more help just ask for it .

Radeon 9600 (some Sapphire OEM model, clocked 400/230). Monitor is Samsung SyncMaster 959NF. Do I need some aditional drivers?

A bit more details, if possible... and where do I type the commands (where is some kind of "Run" dialog or a console?

OK, I will look around for it. Will I be able to do some linux - windows gaming with Wine and Samba? Will I be able to acess files on computers running Windows with FAT/NTFS drives?

Coooool, I will try FC2 package and see if it works (well, it worked in the case of libraries for VLC, so...

Well, I'm still trying to figure out how to make ISDN card work and how to play audio CDs; any ideas about this?

Fedora Core is great~ I guess. I use Linux at school (RH7.3, don't ask why we're not using FC2).. I tried RH9 as a desktop and was pretty good. I installed RTCW for it~ I got about 50% the performance compared to Windows, but it was alright.

Linux is getting easier and easier to use with distros like Fedora Core, but still has a long ways to go to reach the ease of use of Mac OS or Windows.

Were you dual booting Fedora Core II before your upgrade or a different distro? And if it was FC2, how was it working before your upgrade? Also, does it have a lot of bugs?

I didn't have any Linux before, and I always prefer doing a clean install... I know only that dual booting works together with WinXP SP2.
