Failing on Ubuntu 8.04

I've tried to get Ubuntu to work on my system but I fail miserably. After installation I can only use 640x480 and no matter what I do I can't get any higher resolution. After that I tried to install the latest proprietary drivers from ATI using the methods on the following page.

Ubuntu Hardy Installation Guide - cchtml.com

Both fail and makes X to fail completely and I can only use the system in console mode.

The funny thing is that if I install 7.10 I get a working system in VESA with resolutions up to 1280x1024. Tried the trick of updating from 7.10 to 8.04 but that failed as well. Can't get the ati driver to work in 7.10 either though.

I've also tried the livecd from OpenSUSE 11 but that won't boot into X either.

I'm at a loss, I have no idea what to do now and it feels like I have to give linux up completely. On the ubuntu-forum everyone is blaming ATI but I doubt it's that simple.

You can all see my hardware in my info. I have a friend with a "normal" 3870 who installed everything with no issues whatsoever. I start to wonder if the linux kernel or something gets confused by the dual gpu's or something.

Any hints or tips would be great because I have no idea what to do now.

And please try newest 8.8 if you can, they might work better.

I had to force Ubuntu to use the xorg.conf with the command
sudo aticonfig --input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf --tls=1
also make sure you remove the mesa files.... thats the renderer ubuntu tries to use and will lock out your ati until you remove it

Finally got it working now that I tried with 8.9

Strange, before with 8.7 I ended up getting the Mesa issue but there were no mesa to remove.. but I just tried from the top with the new 8.9 drivers and it now worked perfectly.

Autodetects my LCD and TV as well so all is good.
