Multiple Cli.exe Processes, more than 10

Hey I've had a look thru old threads and it appears i have a unique problem. My laptop has recently began to have many many instances of Cli.exe running, it drains the CPU and RAM and makes it impossible to count how many there are but they fill the entire task manger window so there is at least 20. The CPU usage goes up to as high as 90%.

This problem only just started after i installed an old Blizzard game Starcraft:Broodwars. I uninstalled the game but now this problem popped up. I ended the processes of a few and they all went away bar 2 or 3 but returned later after the screen saver had been on for about 6 hours.

If anyone knows how i can fix this problem it would be much appreciated as the Laptop is only a month old. It isnt normally used for games and will never again but it does need to run AutoCAD and Solidworks.

Card is: ATI Mobility Radeon X1600
Driver Version: 8.201.2.0

CCC version is: 1.2.2154.38250
Microsoft NET Framework Version: 1.1.4322.2032

Computer is a AcerSystem
Genuine Intel CPU
T2500 @ 2.00GHz
1GB RAM

Windows XP Home Ed.
2002 SP2

Thanks.

I have this problem too.

No idea where to start with fixing it, but googling led me here. Any help would be fantastic.

I did a "restart runtime" which seems to fix it but then you cant run the same program that caused the problem. What caused your problem?

Havent used the Laptop much since but i'm pretty sure it's working fine now.

Same trouble

I'm having the same issue, also with an Acer laptop, although I have a Radeon x1400. The problem generally appears while doing something demanding a fair amount of performance from the Radeon chip. I think the core problem is that Acer used a very outdated set of drivers to make the latest driver set.

I think we have to wait until the next set of hacked mobile drivers come out, hopefully the next version will support the x1nnn cards. Until then, I think we're hosed.

Update

Update for you all.

By setting affinity for both CLI.exe sessions to CPU0, and forcing down the ATI2EVXX.exe instances, I am stable playing CoD2 and AoE3.

To set affinity, bring up a task list (ctrl-shift-esc), right-click on the task, choose Set Affinity from the menu that comes up, and uncheck one CPU or the other.

Looks like ATI's current drivers on the Acer line aren't good with CoreDuo.

What do you mean by "forcing down" ATI2EVXX.exe instances??

Your problem is not unique. I also have an ATI X1400 Radeon graphics card with Dual Core Processor. The laptop is an Acer Aspire 5670, top of the line. It seems that I also have had the problems after playing Starcraft (Broodwar as well, though it probably doesn't matter). Several instances of CLI.exe randomly, but surly begin running and eat 100% of my 2GB of RAM and 1.66GHz Dual Core processors.

Anyways yes, the solution will come with.. omg haxes!! In any case, yes set the affinity to only one of your cpu's. It will give you one of them to work with while the other is fuxing itself up.

uninstall the ati drivers completely, reboot, reinstall the ati drivers
(make sure you have both .net 1.1 and 2.0 installed also)

Hello:

You could also try a quick fix by disabling the CLI.exe from the start up registry entries.

You can download autoruns from www.systernals.com to disable / delete the entry, or use MSCONFIG to disable it.

You could also navigate to the registry key yourself and delete it, but the other to methods i described allow you to restore it.

Good luck,

msconfig

[apologizes for conflicting suggestion]

Radeon mobility 9000 using DHmodTool 6.5 driver
CCC 1.2.2314.20337
.NET 1.1/2.0/CF

taking cli.exe out of startup is what caused my problem - ended up with over 50 instances of cli.exe running which was blocking my Outlook send/receive...

checking the box to run cli.exe @ startup seems to have put things back to normal

good luck

P.S. CCC is more or less eye candy around the control panel options but my advanced settings were not permitting me to set resolutions higher than my primary laptop display (1024x768) for the secondary monitor - even though it displayed that the secondary was capable of higher rez...
