Mob. Radeon 9600 AGP Port/texture mapping disabled/not functioning
Hello; I have an Averatec 6100 6130HS-20 Mobility 9600 (P4-3.0; 512MB & 64MB ATI)
Upon purchasing Civlization 4, I had to upgrade to DirectX 9.0c. Civilization 4 was way too jerky and slow, even with slowest graphic settings. Firaxi's website said to upgrade to the newest drivers (I was using the 6.14 from Averatec's website). From ATI.com. I upgraded to the new Catalyst 6.4 drivers (I think the driver version is 8.14 or 8.16) and also installed the Civ 4 1.52 patch which was made to address known Radeon incompatability issues with Civ4. No dice. 'DXdiag' has 'greyed' out the AGP Texture Acceleration tab under 'Display' and I can't "enable" it. ATI's Smartgart feature says my AGP "speed" is off and I assume I'm just using PCI equivalence. I try to get Smartgart to change AGP speed to 4x or 8x; Smatgart then requests a "retest" and a reboot, but upon reloading, it has set the speed back to 0x/off. I believe if I get AGP "speed" turned on, then I will get AGP texture mapping to work with DXdiag and then CIV 4 will run properly. I also have the same jerky, unsatisfactory performance with the Call of Duty 2 demo. So, I decided to clear all my ATI registry drivers (as per Tweakguides.com tutorial) and installed the most recent (mobility) Omega drivers. Everything works, but I still cannot get the AGP ports turned on. ATI's website FAQ says "simply" flash the MB bios to the most current, but unfortunately Averatec customer support says no new BIOS upgrades (nor videocard upgrades) and there is no mention of AGP settings in the UMA CMOS (American Megatrends). The only other thing I can think of is that DXdiag says I'm using a "generic television" for my display and this automatically disables the AGP port. I've connected the laptop's S-Video port to a TV in the past, but not presently and have made sure that the TV and the dual monitor setting are off in the ATI settings' 'displays' tab. No other problems at all, except how do I turn my AGP port back on and make it to 'stay' on? Why does DXdiag insist I'm using a "generic television" when I'm not? I don't necessarily see a connection, but it's weird nonetheless. Should I revert back to the Averatec site's 2005 Radeon 9600 driver (6.14.xx)? Thanks! |
