Hardware acceleration problems!

Ok so I'm not sure what kind of problem this classifies as but here it is:

I have a radeon mobility "9000" supposedly overclocked to be a 9200 as is the case on most of the presario x1000 laptops. Anyway, I installed the Omega 5.6 drivers on my computer (because this is the latest version that works) and everything seemed to be fine. I tried playing Battlefield 2 and it loads up fine, and I've even been able to play the game but when I try to change my options the screen everything goes black. I have seen the options screen but after a few seconds the image seems to get distorted and then goes black with only my regular mouse cursor being displayed (all music from the game still plays). So to get more to the problem...my original settings have hardware acceleration all the way up and a screen resolution of 1920x1200 before the game starts up but after the game gets all messed up and I end it, my regular desktop screen is "messed up." Not only is the resolution changed to 800x600 but, when I drag a window across the sreen it literally lags. The only way I have found to fix this is to turn hardware acceleration completely off, which in turn seems to turn off ati control center.

Does anyone know why this occurs or how to remedy it? Thanks!

Default Post Hope this is mildly helpful.

To be completely technical....the drivers you are using are not properly controlling/refreshing your chipset's frame buffer.

Plus it sounds like your AGP Bus driver may need updating.

I would recommend downloading the Catalyst 5.6 driver from the ATi Driver Archive here, and moding it with patje's tool:
https://support.ati.com/ics/support/...estionID=19553

I would also STRONGLY recommend downloading the newest GART driver for your AGP Bus from ATI.
You can download the GART, Control panel, and Display driver separetly in the "low speed" download sections.

You can Patje's tool here:
http://www.hardwareheaven.com/patje

Or, if you'd like to use Omega's drivers, i would recommend uninstalling them completely through Add/Remove in Control panel, restart... and than using the DriverCleaner to wipe out any debris left over from the drivers.

DriverCleaner Pro can be downloaded here:
http://www.drivercleaner.net/professional.html
Keep in mind that overclocking these notebook chipsets generally tends to make them unstable, especially if the laptop isn't designed to handle the extra heat they will generate when in full operation.

If all else fails, and your still willing to try something else, consider the Following mobility catalyst driver discovered by Alexl55 in my thread regarding the "Epic legacy of the IGP 3xx chips..."
You can get a copy from here: (oddly enough it is WHQL certified....)
http://www.station-drivers.com/telec...-2kxp-whql.exe
If the link is broken, go here:
http://www.station-drivers.com/page/...20mobility.htm

Let me no how it turns out.

Good luck, and take care

Randomness.

EDIT: I recommend installing the GART before the display drivers if you do reload them. DriverClean *may* remove the original GART when cleaning, so when reloading, make sure you reload the GART AGP bus driver first before the display drivers.

Well...I am not having any problems with the DH modded driver anymore to be honest. I was fooling around alot trying to get cat 5.7-6.4 to work using powerstrip and an external monitor but I need a better monitor to make any progress. So after countless hours of putting my comp through the paces I figured I'd just return to the DH modded 5.6 cat and for some reason it seemed to work fine. I will try the upgrades you mention for the increased performance but I'm pretty happy with what I have now...must've been a problem with the first install or something buggy.

thanks for all the advice anyway...maybe it'll give me something useful to work with

Hey,

Catalyst 5.6 to 5.9 contain the most "preformance" improvements that are compatible with your chipset. 5.6 having the most changes. Considering it is a relatively older chipset, i doubt you'll find much more preformance enhancements with the newer versions. I would only suggest trying to newer versions if you need to correct a bug in a game, or other known driver glitch that you may encounter.

BTW...i have noticed that should hardware acceleration be disabled...for what ever reason, accidental, intentional, random glitch, or windows simply being cranky, it generall cannot be re-enabled without uninstalling and re-installing the driver completely. It has something to do with the way the driver interacts with Windows' registry settings and the installed system AGP bus. re-installing usually corrects any of those problems.

take care.

Yea...I was mainly upgrading the driver to fix game glitches. I managed to get my torchlight to work in SCCT with cat 5.6 but I can't seem to get BF2 to fully load a mission As you said, my hardware is a bit out of date but it's gotten me pretty far and I'm satisfied for now.

-Thanks again
