My screen goes black, ATI Mobile X600

I have seen that sometimes the videocard shut off in different forums. Mine is a bit different though.

I have the latest drivers from Omega 6.3 but the thing is the problem happens with any driver I have ever tried even the ones from HP, makers of my laptop. Sometimes when I start up videogames(almost any I have ever tried such as Fallout, MOHAA, Call of Duty) I get a black screen then it goes white. The white isn't instantaneous it kind of starts it different places and grows to cover almost the whole screen. I know the game is running because I hear sounds from the game including from when I change menu items.

A new thing that has started is that sometimes when I change the resolution on my desktop I get the same thing. The weird thing is it doesn't always happen as the game will start up correctly sometimes, same with the resolution switch.

Thx for any replies with info. This might be a hard read as I sometimes runon. Just post if further clarification is needed. I'm running winXP btw.

I thought I was the only person with this problem. It never does it with the original HP drivers but they are more then six months old. Any other drivers and I get the same problems, even with later drivers from HP. I have an HP Pavilion zd8290 EA (ZD8000 series) and the Gfx card is a Mobility X600 (256 MB).

This is the only place I saw this same problem mentioned. It's really hard to figure out what causes it because it doesn't happen every time so I have to stick to a configuration for some time if I'm gonna be sure it worked.

The option I'm testing now is the image scaling option in the panel properties.

One more thing, when I have a secondary display connected (usually a regular TV), the sec. display works normally while my monitor goes blank. Not simply black (like it turns off) bul like spysmily described, it goes black and then slowly changes to a lighter grey colour... really weird!

POST EDIT:
Disabling the 'Scale Image' option in the Panel Properties (under Display in the advanced display settings) seems to be working (so far). It would make sense since the problem occurs when the screen's resolution is changed and, when the option is disabled, the screen doesn't actually change it's resolution, it just displays everything in a smaller window. If this is the case then what would the cause of the problem be? Why does the screen act so strangely when the resolution is changed?

New info: After having extended my troubleshooting efforts, I have found that this problem only happens when the ac adapter is plugged in. If I am using the battery then everything runs fine. In fact I have done as you have said with the 2nd monitor and I can see that the game runs. When I unplug and wait a little then start the game again my screen returns fine on my laptop.
