ATI X1400 game crashes need help

Hello and good day!

I currently have a problem concerning my video card whenever it plays games. When I set my graphics maximize performance using ATI catalyst, most of my games seem to crash. However whenever I set it at a balanced performance it seems to work just fine. Is there any explanation/solution on how I could maximize performance while still being able to play my games uninterrupted?
