Compaq x1000 and Vista (radeon 9000/9200)

I got the Vista beta 2 that MS has up for free download this week and installed it to my Compaq x1000 laptop. It works and all is functional, minus the video card. Thus I'm at driverheaven begging for assistance.... =)

Anyway, I have it functioning in VGA mode which isn't bad. The only problem is that VGA sucks.

As anyone with an x1000 line laptop knows, any Catalyst driver 5.7 or higher will not work. The consensus is that the LCD isn't detected correctly. ... Vista has the exact same issues. ... Continuing on, does anyone out there have a way to get an older 5.6 version of the Catalyst drivers working? That would solve the issues perfectly, or if we could find a way to get the current Vista beta2 drivers to detect the LCD correctly that would work also.

I talked to HP support a bit ago. I do have to say that the concept of an online chat is damned handy, but I sometimes thinkg they are talking to multiple people. It took sometimes 5 minutes or more between replies. The syntax is odd, so it's obvious that the gentleman I talked to is overseas, but does he have to feed it through translation software each time I send a line? Here's a transcript of the online chat:

Quote:
Paul: Hello Culley.
Paul: Welcome to HP Total Care for Compaq Products. My name is Paul. How may I help you today?
Culley Morrow: Hello, my question should be quick
Culley Morrow: I have an older Compaq x1000 series notbook, and singe version 5.6 of the video drivers there has been no updates. Roughly a year now. Will there be support soon for new versions as well as Vista?
Culley Morrow: Older, but still quite functional with today's standards. Vista functions on it, all but the video. XP and Vista seem to both detect the LCD incorrectly
Paul: I understand you concern . However you do not have test data on the Vista for your notebook model.
Culley Morrow: Other than Vista, will the video driver for XP be updated or allow ATI to merge it into the unified Mobility drivers?
Paul: Please provide the serial number of your notebook so I can check the latest driver available for your notebook.
Paul: You can locate the 10 or 12 digit alphanumeric serial number at bottom side of the notebook.
Culley Morrow: I will ahve to get that from home, I am currently at work. It is a CTO version of the x1000. The latest that has been seen is http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&tool=softwareCategory&os=228&prod uct=350715&softwareitem=ob-30772-1
Culley Morrow: That download is over a year old, or a slightly newer modded version based off the ATI Catalyst 5.6 can be downloaded from the internet
Paul: May I know if you are trying to download the latest version of video driver?
Culley Morrow: I already have that driver that is in the support section. I am trying to locate a newer 6.0+ version that works with XP or Vista.
At this point unforunately I was cut off, it was time to go home anyway so i left work. I might try again tomorrow.

I have been asking for new drivers for over a year now... they don't seem interested in helping... I don't really understand what can be so hard to fix to get it working with newer drivers . there is also the same problem in linux (ubuntu 6.06), installing anything called 3d drivers gives a nice garbled screen so stuck with just 2d graphics there. at least my xp works with 3d but since i like to play the odd game now and then i am stuck with old drivers that don't work in alot of newer games like civ4...

Hello there.

I came across this forum just recently when looking for driver for my HP x1030AP with MR9200 for use with Vista Beta 2.

A guy from UK whom has similar problem with his NX7000 with MR9200 too. We have corresponded twice and found an interim solution to get MR9200 working in Vista Beta2.

Please refer to my post in this forum.

Oh by the way, anyone had any issue with Windows XP reinstalled and constantly losing the screen resolution of 1680x1050 after each cold-restart?

I seem to have issue with getting my MR9200 to stay at 1680x1050 after a power-down and turning-on. If i do restart, it is fine, especially after reinstall the driver from HP's site, and restarted with the correct resolution. But the next time when i do cold-bootup, the resolution gone back to 1280x1024.

Any idea?

Nice, I'll have to take a look at that post and see if it works tonight when I get home.
