9700 and New Catalyst Issues...Help would be appreciated.

Hello,

I have a laptop with a Mobility Radeon 9700 128mb card in it. When I got the computer about a year ago, I read into this a little, but since then I have forgotten. I know that I had used the desktop Catalyst Control Center and the drivers by using the Driver Modder. I believe the version i had was the Catalyst 4.12. It all worked fine until recently when I decided to update my drivers.

Now, when I try installing new drivers, I keep getting the same issues. I have used the newst Driver Cleaner Pro, DHModTool3, and Catalyst 6.5, 5.10, and 5.11 (the desktop versions with CCC) and also installed the 2.0 .Net Framework before attempting. I follow the instructions by uninstalling the CCC by the "Add/Remove Programs" in Control Panel. I then reboot in safe mode, which I then use Driver Cleaner Pro, on the ATI, and the other ATI apps. I then again reboot, and try start the installation process in normal windows mode. I attempt to install Catalyst, recieve the "INF Error" and then Mod the ATI directory. After that, installation works and computer reboots.

This is where the problem occurs. Upon enterning Windows on restart, my screen is not just black, but its totally scrambled. You cannot make out any thing. It just seems to be more of a kalidascope (sp) if anything. On all 3 attempts ( for each Catalyst version ), i restored my system back to right before I attempted anything and try again.

Each time I get the same issues with any version of Catalyst. I also tried the Omega 6.5 versions. If anything has any suggestion, please let me know. Im all ears.

Thanks.

P.S.
System Specs.
Windows XP Professional w/ SP2
1.8 ghz Pentium M
1024 MB DDR RAM
60g 5400 RPM Hard Drive

If you would like any more information, please let me know.

I have the same exact problems that you have and have not found a solution. I own a Sager 8790 Laptop that uses the ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 Pro w 256/mb of ram M11 chip. The only drivers that seem to work are the old default ones they initially had for the laptop.
I have tried the ATI Mobility 6.5 CATs, The ATI Regular 6.5 CATs using DHModtoolv3, and have tried the latest Omega Drivers (6.5 Cats) as well, and all of them fail to work. My screen will look all twisted and skewed to where it is unintelligable.
Anyone have any workarounds for this?

I also have a Sager -- a 3790.. dunno if it matters but my native resolution is 1680 x 1050. Wish I could find a solution to this.

BTW, the reason I was really wanting to update my drivers is because it seems my current drivers wont let me run the Prey Demo, or even Quake 3 Arena... I get the "Cannot initialize OpenGL" error. Happen to know a solution to even this?

I have the same default resolution as well with the 8790.
Hear is what I have to do with the default drivers ( from Sager ) to play anything:

Right click-mouse over My Computer
Properties
Hardware(Tab)
Device Manager(button)
Click [+] next to System devices
right-mouse on CPU to AGP Controller (or whatever your controller is called, mine was Intel(R) 82855 AGP)
Update Driver(button)

Select Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)
Next(button)
Select Don't search. I will choose the driver to install.
Next(button)
Select PCI standard PCI-to-PCI bridge
Next(button)
Finish(button)
Reboot.

Maybe this forum can help ya:

Hope this works

H4rM,

I did a search on www.notebookforums.com and found this thread. Turns out alot of people with Sagers had our same problem. I haven't tried this fix yet, but from what I see from the remaining of the thread, it does work.

Go to the last post on the page of this link:
http://www.notebookforums.com/showth...light=catalyst

The poster should be Dase. His instructions should do the trick.

I'm going to go try it now and I will repost as to if it worked or not. Nevertheless, if it works for me, I'm sure it will work for you.

H4rM,

Like I said, I'd come back to confirm ... and yes. it worked =)

A few things I had to do different than his instructions...
He said to choose the monitor and auto populate..

Well, i had 12 different monitors listed... all but one said "Default Monitor"..
The last has ID of MS 0000 ... or something.. There was none listed as [ACTIVE] and I couldn't "Auto Populate" any of them for some reason.

anyways, I knew that my native resolution was 1680 x 1050 with 75 refresh rate.. so i went and "Add Mode" to each of the monitors with X = 1680 and Y = 1050, and refresh rate of 75, and applied. After restarting computer, the screen looked all scrambled still but I was able to move the mouse cursors over my name to log into Windows. After a few seconds, the resolution changed to some strange resolution that worked when my drivers were loaded. Anyways, I then reopened RefreshForce and noticed that the last monitor was listed as ACTIVE, and it let me auto populate.... it filled out all the proper resoluations my screen is capable of, and then I added 1680 x 1050 w/ 75 refresh.

Right click desktop, click Settings, and choose 1680 x 1050.

Bang, your set.

Sweet! Thank-you very much!!!!
I am home now trying this out, and had my 1st failure, since I found the same thing that you did. Alot of monitors exactly as you described and no Active ones. I am now going to try it your way and see.

Thanks for your help, I hope it works for me.

Damn this is taking forever to find:
Mine shows 126 different "default monitors" and numbers 127 thru 147 are Plug and Play monitors, and then 148 thru 167 are Generic Television ones.
I have been editing them all and am up to number 40. Still no success.

Here is how I got mine working. I have the Mobility Catalyst 6.6 drivers installed now.

Start with no drivers installed.
Run the Mobility Catalyst installer, but only to extract the files to the C:/ATI folder.
Then cancel installation of the drivers.
Then go to My Computer, properties, device manager/right click display adapter/properties
then update driver, select the option "you will select/choose which driver to install."
Point it to the C:/ATI folder to an inf file in there. let it install.
Reboot.
Now to get the Cat Control Center installed, just go to the C:/ATI folder and click on the setup.exe and install the driver all over again. For some reason doing it this way works for me, while installing from scratch does not work. Maybe something initially with the installer trying to install the ATI drivers when the display has no driver other than the WinXP ones.

Works great now.

Oh my god... thank you SO much for your find of Dase's post!

I've had this problem since FOREVER. I've tried posting here numerous times, but no one seems to know the solution.

I can FINALLY play same games now.

Wink each new mobility catalyst direct download

You do not need moding desktop catalyst, just download mobile catalyst from here:
http://www.ati.com/online/mobilecatalyst/. It works very well on my Toshiba Tecra A7 with mobility X1600. It whole pack - driver and CCC. It is direct download link for all newest mobile catalyst.
