Mob 7500 widescreen?

I have an Inspiron 5100 with the ATI Mobility 7500 and the omega drivers. Is this setup too weak for an external widescreen? I tried out my friend's and was getting some flickers, and I couldnt get the right resolution. He runs at 1280x720, but when I choose that option, it gives me a smaller skinny display with boxes on the top and bottom. Can this be fixed, and is it on the display or computer end?

if the drivers dont support the native resolution you can use powerstrip to set a custom resolution to suit the specific monitor.
