Dell 9100 with MR9800 problem

Hi,

I have a lovely Dell 9100 laptop (3.2GHz CPU, 1 Gig main mem) with an ATI Mobility 9800 (256 Meg).
I've recently installed the new Omega drivers (6.5) and started playing a whole host of games on my laptop again.

The problem is, I don't seem to be able to alter my screen resolution to anything non native without the display becoming "virtual".
By that I mean if I change the resolution of the desktop to say 1400x1050 (native is 1600x1050), then it seems to drop the resolution to 1280x800 and have the rest of the desktop scrollable. I have tested this by unselecting "Scale resolution to display", and I get a nice big black border around the window, but still have to scroll the desktop within, it does not use the resolution of 1400x1050 on 1600x1050 and have black borders.

I hope that makes sense!
It's driving me potty, I've searched pratically everywhere and can find no help.
I've update my LCD .inf file with the correct resolutions, I've ticked and unticked everything in the Display panel, I've even reinstalled older drivers, none of which has worked.

My main issue is being able to play games at a lower widescreen resolution, say 1024x640.

Can anyone help?
Is it a problem with the Omega drivers? The ATI Tray Tool? Or Multires?
Or am I stuck forever in 800x600, 1280x800 and 1600x1050?

I just want to be able to have and scale other resolutions, is that too much to ask!!!??!

(Ok, maybe a little dramatic, but you get the idea!)
Liege.
