What driver should I use. IGP 320M An oddly selfish thread.
HP ze4600 Laptop
mobile AMD Athlon XP 2400+ (1.79GHz) Video: IGP 320M (7000 equiv and sold as such) Ram: 192MB (the 32mb max [or recommended possibly due to driver issues] is dedicated to the video card) HDD 20GB Upgraded recently to XP Pro and could go back to 2k if I thought it would be better. My primary concern is OpenGL. When ATI said they would begin supporting OpenGL in the Radeon series AFTER the 7000 I was about ready to scream... I'd had two video cards that they seemingly abandoned (the other one being a Rage IIc [rage... yes... it caused so much]) I hear the Catalyst Command Center eats up a bit of ram... Ram is at a premium on my system (which used to run at near 100% cpu usage... all... the... time. I'd like any other tweaks. Should I use 4.10, 5.13, or... ??? I've seen similar threads but... none of them seemed very concerned about OpenGL... let it be known I may (assuming free time) learn graphics programming on this system and OpenGL would be very nice. Additionally I intend to install an X-terminal and the only one which supports GLX for free (once it's actually put out... if it's actuallly put out) is WierdX. It currently has no graphics driver. Before I was using the one supplied by HP and had no OpenGL... anything I can do to get OpenGL working on XP Pro would be appreciated. I've even considered GLXWrapper but wouldn't pay for it... in fact all options requiring money are (at least temporarily) out. [Including more ram]. So how about it... all you performance guru's... help me 'squeeze'!!! The OpenGL is actually what led me to this site... I was reading about patje's mobility modder and I recall reading that he actually put an OpenGL driver back for one of the drivers (this was under the EPIC Legacy thread...) Priorities: OpenGL, Normal Performance, DirectX, DVD Playback. Though the last two are a close tie... Heat is also somewhere in there (but mostly because of the loud fans on this bugger... I may need to boot it up during class sometimes). Rest assured I have searched the website and couldn't find what I was looking for, (OpenGL-related recommendations). I'd appreciate it if a mod could change the title to 'OpenGL on an IGP 320M? Which drivers to use?' Titles lacking relevance... they draw in help by the boat-load! P.S. Currently using the default (generic) drivers, holding off for recommendations.

I think it's the program that interfaces with my ATI drivers and displays volume on the screen (and also the reason I had TWO different volumes for a while) End life-story. Hello Temporal:
The Radeon IGP 320M (and other 3xxM chips) core supports OpenGL. All ATi Radeon Drivers come with their own OpenGL driver modules, which are compatible with this chipset. This Graphics chipset supports OpenGL 1.3 fully, and most of the extensions in version 1.4 I recommend OpenGL Extensions Viewer from here: http://www.realtech-vr.com/glview/ to find out more about the supported OpenGL extensions this chipset supports. I would personally recommend using the latest HP-ATi drivers for your notebook, which you can download here: http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/fi...oad/22817.html They are based on Catalyst 4.4, and Provide OpenGL, DirectX, and proper DVD playback using Overlay mixer rendering and iDCT Hardware Acceleration. The HP Package also has the ATi Control Panel, which uses less resources than the bigger and more problematic ATI Catalyst Control Centre. In Windows XP: Any Catalyst version newer than version 4.10 will run into DVD Playback issues using Overlay mixer rendering, however you could install a DVD decoder that uses VMR rendering, such as Sonic CinePlayer 2.0 Using Patje's mod tool will sometimes lead to OpenGL driver load errors. If your looking for newer drivers with OpenGL, i would recommend the Catalyst Mobility 5.13b drivers from station-drivers.com. However, this will not provide proper Overlay rendering for DVD playback in Windows XP. In Windows Vista, the DVD issues have been resolved, and i have posted custom Vista drivers based on Catalyst 6.4 that include OpenGL and the ATi GART (AGP Bus Driver). You can also use these drivers in Windows XP, but again, DVD playback will only work using VMR (Video Mixing Renderer) enabled DVD Decoder. reference my Thread "Epic Legacy of the Radeon 3xxM chips out there..." on PAGE 13 regarding the drivers i posted, or click here to view the specific post: http://www.hardwareheaven.com/showpost...&postcount=188 Do not use any Catalyst driver based on versions 6.6 or newer. These are not compatible with older ATi Radeon GPUs lower than the Radeon 9500 series. Heating issues are only a concern if your heatsinks are clogged / blocked / dusty, or if your fans are not properly running. Normally, the cooling fan will only kick into a louder operating mode when the system requires the additional cooling. Good luck, and take care. - Randomness |

Thanks
Thanks I finally have OpenGL. After hearing ATI would support OpenGL AFTER the radeon 7000 series I was about ready to scream. But all that's over... everything after the ---'s are there JIC someone is bored.
Results: According to the extension support list I have 100% up to 1.3, 66% (10/15) from 1.4, and none of 2.0... all the same it's nice to finally have OpenGL (even If I don't have GL_ARB_shadow (shadow... so cool... yet so elusive). Thanks! ---------The following is a bit messy... mind:dump!! ----- I'll go study now. Additionally installing the driver enabled Hibernation support on my Laptop!! Video that was playing choppily without the driver now runs smooth full-screen with it. Although I'm wondering if I should set it down from true color to I have one interesting HP addition... GL_HP_occlusion_test, 3 extensions listed as NV... though not sure if they are usable or merely included in the implementation. It says I have 64MB allocated, not 32 as I thought. And bizarrely enough under display modes (PowerVR test) it has two listed at 1 hz!!! Bizarrely enough I still have one strange driver under audio listed as 'MEDIA' with an ID of 0000 (same as the enumerator if it weren't an audio device). I believe it to be the graphics driver that displays changes in volume (I enabled the audio bar but did not insert the CD). And finally there's a $5(after rebates, 15 before) autorun-capable USB Flash Drive for sale at office depot! (Not related but nice) 256megs... the U3 simulates a CD-rom drive to enable autorun... it can be replaced with your own stuff if you want. (Might be nice to have keyed to a batch file if your display ever goes out.... you can have it run a diagnostic program or something[happened to me once]). Two final questions... a driver is automatically started up (it drives the HP wireless configuration manager) but as I don't have a hp wireless card it immediately crashes.... if anyone knows how to remove it I'd appreciate a link... And what's the best resolution/color depth for 64MB of ram (the entire screen takes up ??? at true color with 1024 x 768) And what about the ICM file? But basically... my computer is working... and as good or better than ever... and finally with OpenGL! (Which I though I would never have due to the radeon 7000) Everything else is just icing. The main reason I wanted OpenGL was for a windows GLX-Terminal, which I've been trying to find (so I can try colinux with 3D support) thanks a trillion. Just looked up iDCT... and I have PowerDVD as well as intervideo WinDVD4... I think I'll try those to see how they play DVD's. Although I am worried about the ram usage... It's limited on my system... don't even have 256megs (256-64[video] = 192)
