Getting more power from Xpress 200M

Ok I see many people ask and I spent quite alot of time doing research

If you got a laptop with 200M as graphix then you possibly moaning about the preformance. I got a HP dv5000 Turion 64 @ 1.8G, 1024 DDR 333, 80G, GFX 128MB share. To improve the gaming experience you can only do so by updating to the latest driver and overclocking. (do it at your own risk)

Radeon Xpress 200M -
Some claim that the default core speed is 350MHz and share memory runs ar 250MHz but my laptop runs @ 300/250 (strange but my system ram runs at DDR333 = 266MHz I have no idea why the gfx memory say 250MHz) the latest driver can be found in ati under motherboards with IGP. By using the latest driver you have the best chance of not getting a problem in 3D application (in theory anyway) You might also want to adjust the powerplay to enable preformance over battery life.

To overclock your core, you need ATiTool 0.25 beta it offers support to R480M which is out poor old xpress 200M. now carefully adjust and try to find the max core, for mine it is about 345MHz (not even the claim default speed ) well to play safe I will set a 3D profile running at 333MHz, slighly improvment still better then nothing. now you can also try to find a min stable clock for core, I jumped to use 66MHz (powerplay default is 100MHz) store it as my 2D profile, now when running 3D applications core will accelerate to 333MHz and on exit it will refer down to 66MHz. This offer a more flexible clock control over the powerplay option by Ati (well it is under the same principles anyway)

CPU - Turion 64
It is the same technology to the A64M then A64tweaker can be use to do some optimising but I aint that good at using it. The least you can do is clock up your RAM speed to 200MHZ (DDR 400) this will allow an improvement margin in 3D gaming. But you must test try to see if your RAM can substain such speed.

Atlernatly you can use CPUFSB to overclock the CPU and RAM by adjusting the FSB. You will need to know the model of the clockgen of your laptop, (well I cant help you out on finding this) the max of my clkgen will do is @ 22x resulting my CPU 1.8G>>2.1G NOTE this will also increase the clock of your memory

You can only use one of the above method at the same time as increasing FSB affects the memory and you cannot use A64 Tweaker to adjust the memory clock on top of cpufsb (well you can try as I didnt)

Well after these your system should play a little better but yet still suffering from poor quality of gaming... I post this just in case you wanted to know the possible solution, there is no way you can update the graphix card in your system so dont bother .

I wanted to collect some data to support my "creative" thinking for squeezing all the juice out of our poor little 200M laptops, if you can help please post the following

MAKE eg HP Pavilion DV5000
CPU eg Turion 64 ML32 1.8G
RAM eg Hyundai DDR333 512 x 2 single channel
GPU/Mem eg Xpress 200M / Share 128MB
default GPU/Memory clock eg 300/250
Max stable Overclocked GPU/Mem eg 345/250

PS there is a version of Xpress 200M with 128MB dedicated memory, I really would like to compare the preformance of that with the shared memory version, if you can help please leave a note.

If you read upto here then thanks for looking at this long boring article, I apologise for the poor grammar and possibly spelling mistakes! Hope you find this useful !
