Unable to Achieve Optimal Performance
Greetings all, I'm in new territory here and I can't quite figure out what to do. I recently purchased a used laptop, new hard drive however, with 2.6 ghz 1 gig of RAM and an unfortunate Radeon ATI Mobility 64 MB. I understand this RAM speed is low, however I'm reading threads about people who are able to run Doom 3 on moderate specs so I didn't think it would be that bad. I'm basicaly looking to use this machine to run another unfortunate addiction, WoW, however even with every Omega spec that I can find turned on High Performance, and every detail level turned to performance in WoW, Im getting no more ten a few frames per second. I do not know if it is a driver issue, or if the video card is just *that* bad. I'm an unsure as to how to work with the drivers here, as I am use to running a PC. However the previous drivers I was working with did not give me OpenGL support or something, because I could not run Direct3d tests with DXDiag on any of them until this current Omega driver. When installing this Omega driver, I did uninstall all previous ATI install (and ran drivercleaner in safe mode). HOwever the performance is terrible, I'm even getting some lag while scrolling with an internet explorer window. I'm at a lose as to what needs to be done to get a Radeon ATI Mobility IGP card installed and working properly, or if any other part of my laptop needs a driver update. I am going to post part of my DXdiag to help (as the entire thing is to long to fit in a post), if there is another procure as to go about asking for help or if more information is needed, please let me know. (the hard drive is new and very little has been put on it outside of WoW, so there is barely anything running in the background).

My guess, the celeron processor coupled with the card having shared memory and being old, those are on par with what you get. My lappy, 3.06 Pentium, 64mb radeon 9000 agp, 1 gig of ram, I may get around 30FPS in WoW, lower (not basement) settings. it drops quite a bit at IF, buts its generally tolerable. Try an older set of Omega's (4.12 are great for me) and see what you get.

Update: After reading some of the threads I was able to change the video memory from 64 mb to 128 (and thus sacrificing some RAM). I have noticed no performance increase in WoW which is insanely odd though. THis makes me think it has to be the driver in some way shape or form. I am pasting the newest DXdiag results with the 128 mb of video RAM and with the DIrect3d tests run. Please let me know what drivers I should be looking at as I am completely lost (I am not use to laptops/this brand so I have no idea if there are any motherboard/bios/sound card drivers that need updating. Everything is so damned difficult to find, including working video card drivers!).
Also, when running the Direct3d tests, the box with the DirectX logo on it was spinning INSANELY fast, never seen it do that before. Normally during the tests its a nice slow decent framerate spin, here the thing just flipped out and spun in circles insanely fast on all 3 tests, dunno what that means, but it was pretty funny :P ------------------ System Information ------------------ Time of this report: 11/3/2006, 15:07:29 Machine name: TREY-2HY0GDWNM2 Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2 (2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519) Language: English (Regional Setting: English) System Manufacturer: Hewlett-Packard System Model: Presario 2500 (DS542U) BIOS: PhoenixBIOS 4.0 Release 6.0 Processor: Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.60GHz Memory: 894MB RAM Page File: 242MB used, 2023MB available Windows Dir: C:\WINDOWS DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904) DX Setup Parameters: Not found DxDiag Version: 5.03.2600.2180 32bit Unicode ------------ DxDiag Notes ------------ DirectX Files Tab: No problems found. Update 2. I installed the catalyst 4.12 drivers as suggested (IE Omega drivers 2.5.97a) and ran WoW. I am still getting maybe 5-8 FPS in the center of Undercity, and maybe 10-15 while running around outside. I really can't play with this lag, and it would seem a card now running at 128 MB should give a little bit better performance out of a game that really isn't that graphicaly demanding. I am still pondering if its the graphics drivers, or perhaps other laptop drivers. I read the stickied thread though and saw some motherboard/BIOS upgrade suggestions though I have no idea what I need. Anymore information would be very helpful as I would think that even though the laptop is a year and a half old...a 2.6 ghz 890 (app) mb of RAM and 128 mb video card would be able to run WoW at something better then 10 FPS at the lowest settings ;( So friggin annoying....

what resolution are you trying to run it at?
I still think the card is just too outdated. I don't think that card is even supported (ie. does not support Hardware Transform and Lighting). Someone else would be able to give the specifics, but I don't think you have a problem. edit: Just confirmed, the min. specs for WoW are a Geforce2 or equivalent. That would be at least an ATI 7500, which your card is at least a generation before that (if not 2). i think you are out of luck. |

Desktop resolution is at 1024x 768...but WoW is runing at 800 x 600. So when I say its running at the bare minimum, its running at the bare minimum. I mean I suppose I can see where your coming from, I just read posts of people playing Doom 3 and Battlefield 2 with this video card, though I have not tried those games, I had expected a bit more performance out of it. However I'm really not sure, hell I'd take 30 FPS if I could get it, that's at least playable. I'm really not familiar with laptops, however I also know that you can't really upgrade a laptop, and this was a 500 dollar laptop which is only a year and a half old, so I did kinda expect a little more performance out of it.

I don't know what else to tell you. I can tell you this, BF2 and Doom 3 are out of the question, lol. Doom 3 barely played on my lappy, and I doubt BF2 would even load. Keep an eye on this thread though, someone else may have some insight. good luck and welcome to DH, BTW.
