Catalyst Question

Hey, i have a question regarding the Catalyst Control Center. When i use the modtool from this site to update my drivers (specifically, my mobility radeon 9800 with the ati radeon 9800 drivers), and it installs the CCC, I get access to many more resolution options (i hadn't updated in a while). Is this a result of the updated drivers or a result of using CCC for the first time (this was the first time i've installed it)? Another question, is it possible to run older versions of drivers (for some reason, the 6.11 drivers cause Oblivion to crash on startup) but still have the CCC? Ideally, id like to still be able to run Oblivion (with old drivers) but have access to the expanded set of resolution options. Any help would be appreciated.

Update: In case it's not obvious, im new to this site, and will forsake the CCC thing for the ati tray tools. I guess the increased resolutions are probably part of the new drivers...crap.
